Cricket 1900
1 8 0 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M at 17, 1900. at such a critical moment, it was a ball of a most de-dly variety. It was fatal. As a man, Tom Hearne was very greatly respected by all who knew him. No one spoke more highly of him than the mem bers of the famous Walker family, for whose team he played for some ypars, having been engaged by Mr. John Walker to superintend the old Southgate cricket ground. They recognised in him a man who was absolutely straight forward, and incapable of doing a mean action whether on or off the cricket field. He was succeeded at Southgate by his brother “ old George,” and thence forward he was to be found at Lord’s, where for years he was chief ground superintendent. In 1876 he was obliged to give up cricket owing to a stroke of paralysis from which he never entirely recovered, but he still remained on the ground staff at Lord’s ; and there can be very few cricketers who have frequented the ground to whom his face was not familiar. He was, I believe, only four months younger than his life-long friend, Robert Thoms, the latter having been born on May 19tK, 1826. The date of Thoms’ birth is usually given as 1825, but according to the famous umpire him self it was a year later. W. A. B e t t e s w o r t h . N O R rriBRO O K v. To the E ditor o f C r ic k e t . S ir ,— There was a meeting of the Cricket Committee at the Bridgetown Club, Barbados, on April 17th. A letter was read from the Demerara Committee stating that Air. Sproston was unable to accompany the team, but Mr. Learmond and Burton (pro.) were prepared to leave by mail on May 26th. A letter was read from Jamaica suggesting that Mr. Livingstone from that colony should go in Mr. H. A. Cole’s place. This was agreed to. A letter was read from Mr. Aucher Warner offering his services to captain the team in accordance with the suggestions of the West Indian Cricket Committee in London, Mr. Bowring having resigned that post. The offer was accepted, and the meeting terminated. Mr. Bowring will accompany the team as an ordinary member. The personnel of the teamwill therefore be as follows :—A. Warner (capt.), P. A. Goodman, L. S. D’Ade, M. Kerr, H. Livingstone, F. Hinds, W. H. Mignon, C.Olliverre, G. Lear mond, W. Bowring, M. Constantine, Burton and Woods. The loss of three bats men like H. Cole, S. Sproston and G. B. Y . Cox leaves the team much weakened. Now this team is by no means representa tive of the best West India cricket, as with out such batsmen as G. B. Y. Cox, H. Cole, S. Sproston, Sommers Cocks, C. H. Packer and P. J. Cox the team goes home without six of her best men, five of ^hom are bats. Mr. H. B. G. Austin, who is one of the best bats in the West Indies, has gone to South Africa, so the team is extrtmely weak in batting. Mr. Warner, who goes as captain, is no cricketer, a very poor bat, and aninferior field. The team that is now selected will certainly be inferior to ome of the leading London clubs, such as 1 .unpstead, etc., and as it is going to play against fiist-class counties this is too absurd. The bowling of the team is very fair, as nearly every man can bowl, but they will fail badly in batting, and I expect to -hear of a procession from pavilion to wicket and back ; in fact, I shall be surprised if they win a match. lours truly, A WEST INDIAN SPORTSMAN. [We hope for the sake of West Indian cricket that our correspondent will find himself entirely mistaken in his estimate of the team.— E d .] LONDON SCOTTISH v. TJ. C. S.
