Cricket 1900

M ay 1 0, 1 9 0 0 . CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 1 1 7 White drove on to the ground, and watched the game for about half-an-hour. The arrival of Sir George White caused much enthusiasm, and the game was stopped for about ten minutes, during which time “ W. G.” and some of the most prominent people present were in troduced to him. The small scoring in the match at Park Avenue, Bradford, between Wor cestershire and Yorkshire came as a startling contrast to the large innings hit the previous week at the Crystal Palace. Worcestershire were unfortunate in being compelled to play without several of their best men, but their defeat was clearly due to Rhodes and Haigh, who, finding a wicket to their liking, bowled unchanged through both innings of their opponents. On a wicket which suits him Rhodes is probably the most difficult bowler of the present time, as his many excellent performances during the past two seasons on wet wickets abundantly testify. Owing to these two players the match was finished on the first day, and thus one more line must be added to the steadily-increasing list of first-class matches begun and finished in one day. The following is a list of the most notable instances during the present century: — . B .’s v. England, at Lord’s, June 13,1831. Cambridge University v. M.C.C. and Ground, at Cambridge, May 18,1837. Cambridge University v. M.C.C. and Ground, at Lord’s, June 19,1848. Gentlemen o f Kent v. Gentlemen of England, at Lord’s, July 1,1860. North v. South, at Lord’s, July 15,1850. Somersetshire, at Lord’s, May 23,1899. Yorkshire y. Worcestershire, at Bradford, May 7,1900. The two following, although not strictly first-class, are worthy of mention—M.C.C. and Ground v. Somersetshire, at Lord’s, August 9, 1889, and Lancashire v. Lei cestershire, at Manchester, August 29, 1889. In dealing with first-class matches completed in one day, only matches played in the present century are gene rally tabulated. Last-century cricket, however, furnishes several instances, as the following selection (now published for the first time) shows :— Kent v. London, at ---------, July 2.1730. Surrey v. Middlesex, at Moulsey Hurst, July 18,1733. Surrey v. London, at Moulsey Hurst, June 7,1735. London and Middlesex v. Kent, at Moulsey Hurst, July 12, 1735. Surrey v.
