Cricket 1900
1 0 0 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M a t 3 , 1 9 0 0 . him to postpone his dehut for the county until this season, when he will have gained both in strength and experience. In his first two matches at Cambridge this sexson be scored a couple of centuries, in addition to bowling with success on each occasion. A great compliment was paid to his skill whilst Noble was play ing his great ini ings last year against England at Mancbes'er, when ore of the English plnyers stated he wished “ Young Dowson” had been on the side as his bowling would have been of the greatest use. His doings will certainly be followed with more than ordinary interest, as he gives promise of proving to be the best Public School cricketer turned out since Mr. A. G. Steel left Marlborough, and of eventually reaching quite the top of the tree. With reference to the match between the Old Islington Albion and All England, referred to in the interview last week, no mention of it is found in Scores and Biographies, but a notice of it was inserted at the time, 1822, in Annals o f Sporting. With the single exception of the Maryle bone Club (founded in 1787) the Albion is the oldest-established cricket club in the world. The date of the formation of the SevenoaksVineClub,it is true,is generally recognised as being 1750, but the club was reformed in 1849. It is to be hoped that a special match will be set apart to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the club’s foundation. From Edinburgh a lady writes as follows :— “ As you are interested in early cricket you may like to hear that Sir Walter Scott, the famous novelist, was an admirer of the game. I remember my father many years ago telling me that once when visiting Abbotsford the subject of cricket cropped up during conversation, and Sir Walter Scott, being asked his opinion of the game, replied that it was, without doubt, a manly and a noble game, though in his opinion rather fatiguing. Can you tell me whether Sir Walter refers to the game in any of his writings?” The question, which is an interesting one, I must leave for those who are better versed in Scott than myself to answer. It is many years since I last read his works, but speaking from memory I am inclined to think that in one of them he does refer to the game. With the exception of Mr. J. M. Barrie, but few novelists have had much to say about cricket. Dickens, as is well known, devotes an entire chapter in the immortal Piclcwick Papers to a description of the match between Dingley Dell and All-Muggleton as it appeared in the eyes of the excited, jovial and hilarious Pickwickians. Could not Dr. Conan Doyle be induced to give us a volume dealing with the game as his Rodney Stone dealt with boxing ? This year I shall again give from time to time the scores of curious matches, or of matches in which noteworthy perfor mances were accomplished, preference being given to those matches the scores of which did not appear in the sporting papers.
