Cricket 1899
36 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M a r c h 23, 1899. the ’Varsity and School contingent were able to take their places in the team. The ex-soldier has never quite fulfilled in first-class cricket the promise of great things which his b ig scores (continued in 1898) in club matches at Canterbury and elsewhere have seemed to fore shadow. Perhaps he will yet do so. Abel, Brock well, and Gunn were all plants o f slow growth. Huish got through a trying season with great credit. He kept wicket in every match, and, although, of course, he made mistakes sometimes, his dexterity accounted for over 50 of the 315 wickets which fell before the Kent attack in 1898. Of the others who played in the Kent team during the season there is not a great deal to say. E . A. C. Druce and C. E. Worthington, two candidates for the Cambridge eleven, were given places in a match or two, but as they were not good enough for a Cambri Ige team, which was distinctly below the average, it is fair to infer that they were hardly class enough for Kent. But Druce is a useful all-round man who may train on into something better, and Worthington, (an old Tonbridge boy) batted well enough in two or three matches at Cambridge to put him in the running for a place in the Light Blue team, though he failed at tbe pinch. W. L. Knowles reappeared, but only played in two matches. H e batted well enough at Gravesend to cause one to think that he might have been played oftener. Another old hand in J. LeFlem ing, famous for his speed over hurdles, also appeared in two matches with no appreciable succ ss. His younger brother, L. J., of whom a good deal was hoped, was given a really good trial, but did nothing great, his best innings being 32 v. Yorkshire, at Sheffield. There is still plenty of time for him to prove his worth. H . C. Stewart, who did really fiue work for the county in 1897, was very seldom able to play. Last year he scared nearly 900 runs with an average of over 27. This year his three innings realised 11 runs. E . N. II. Blaker, a Westminster boy, played in the last two matches, and showed good form against the very best bow ling at L ord’s. E. A. Willson, a youngster who has been doing big things in club cricket Sittiagbourne way, played at Nottingham without any particular amount of success. The Hon. J. S. E. Tufcon was only given a place in one coun'y match, and did not get an inn ings then. H e s o re d 33, n it out, for the M C.C. v. Yoikshire, at Lord’s, how ever, and might have been a very welcome addition to the couuty team in less prosperous days. Neither G. J. M or- daunt nor E. O’H . Livesay once appeared for Kent, though the latter was asked to play, and the former played in a couple of games for the M .C.C., scoring 48, not out, v. the Cantabs, at Lord’s. E . B. Shine was also an absentee throughout the season, and N. F. Druce did not make his promised debut for the county. It is sincerely to be hoped that so fine a batsman is not to be entirely lost to first- class cricket. J.N .P. L O R D H A W K E 'S T E A M I N S O U T H A F R I C A . ( Continued from page 22).
