Cricket 1899
40d CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OP TH GAME, S e p t . 7, 1899, and produced 148 runs by cricket which was worth watching. Darling seemed likely to make his two hundred, but after being at the wickets for three hours and a half he was dismissed. But so many runs had been made that he was able to declare the innings before one o'iock. Few of the English team are good hands at playing for a draw, and, as Jones was in great form, the result was a fine victory f->r the Australians with which to wind up their tour. It is not on record that the Australians presented Dr. Grace with a testimonial for put’ing them in first. A u s t r a l First in? inep. H Trumb!e, c Ranjitsi iliji, b Hearne J. Played at Scarborough on Sept. 4, 5, and 6. Yorkshire won bv 52 runs. After winning the toss Lord Hawke hesi- t»ted as to whether he should take first innings, finally deciding to do so. This turned out to b 3 a wise move, for although the Yorkshiremen as a whole could do next to nothing against Trott, the visitors did less against Rhodes and Mr. Ernest Smith. Tunnicliffe played a valuable innings for Yorkshire. Mr. Thornton’s X I. lost six wickets for 61, but Mr. Warner played very steadily and well afterwards. With a lead of 41 Yorkshire had made 13 runs in their second innings when stumps were drawn. On Tuesday Mr. Mitchell, Wainwnght and Haigh all played good cricket, but the batting of the day was shown by Mr. Jackson. He was at the wickets for two hours and a quarter, and shewed a complete mastery over the bowling. At the end of the innings Lord Hawke played a very useful innings, in a steady way to which he is not accustomed. When stumps were drawn Mr. Thornton’s team had made 100 for the loss of 3 wickets, so that the game was in an interesting position, for the wicket had greatly improved. Yesterday’s cricket was remarkable for the brilliant batting of Mr. Jones, who was only in for an hour and a quarter. His innings included a couple of hits out of the ground. When five wickets wtre down 122 runs were required to win, but the tail did not rise to the occasion. Y o r k s h ir e . lirst innings. Second innings. F.
