388 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A u g . 31, 1899. CR ICKETING REM IN ISCENCES AND PERSONAL RECOLLECTIONS.* A new book by Dr. W . G. Grace must necessarily attract great attention, for it is impossible that after more than fifty years of first-class cricket he could produce a work of no interest. He has, it is true, gone over much the same ground before in his fascinating volume entitled “ Cricket,” but one always felt that a man who could tell such entertaining stories and make such excellent criticisms would find that he had by no means exhausted his subject in a single volume. But somehow or other, although stories and criticisms are to be found in the new book, they do not sparkle as they did in the old one. It may be that there is so much cricket literature nowadays that we have all become spoiled, and that we do the Doctor an injustice. And yet when any of us take down the former volume it is still difficult to leave it. We are inclined to think that one of the chief reasons why the present book seems less interesting than the other is that it is too statistical. We do not want to see the famous old cricketer tied down to formal chapters which describe cricket in the sixties, in the seventies, in the eighties, in the nineties— each chapter after the sixties divided into tens of years— 1871-1872— and so on ; we prefer him to wander about at his own sweet will and tell us anything that crops up as he did before in an inimitable manner. When we are getting deeply interested in some personal recollections it chills us to read details about the abortive scheme for a county competition (with challenge cup up to date) propounded by the M .C.C. in 1873; to find that the rules in such and such a year contained certain changes; that certain delegates of the counties were present at certain meetings and drafted certain schemes. W e can find all these things in our “ W isden” (where we want to see them) without the slightest trouble. I f the book had been a history of the game since the author began to play it would be an entirely different matter. But fortunately much still remains in the book which will delight everybody, and the chapters on “ Some of my Contemporaries,” ‘ ‘ Ran dom Recollections,” “ Early Recollec tions,” **First Visit to Australia,” are full of good things. The truth of the matter is that if the book had been edited in a relentless manner it would have been worthy to rank with the former book, than which no higher praise could be given. The book is attractively got up, and re flects the greatest credit on the publishers. W e wonder whether “ W .G .” has ever seen u Cricket's Year Book ” for 1899, which was published some time before hi* Reminiscences ; it contains a great many tables of statistics which bear a striking resemblance to the tables which come under the heading of “ A Statistical History of Cricket” in his book; but we do not find that he makes any refer ence to this resemblance. • “ *W.G.* Cricket Reminiscences and Personal Recollections.” (London: James Bowden. 10, Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, London, W.C.) 6s.
