Cricket 1899

A ug . 31, 1899. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 379 made any resistance to the bowling, so that a follow on was necessary—172 runs behind. Bhodes met with very great success with the ball, and seemed to nonplus most of the batsmen very considerably. There was nothing for Sussex to despair of at this period of the game, for they have over and over again played a successful second innings when they have crumbled u d in the first, but again things did not fro well. Mr. Fry was run out when he was just getting very happy with the bowling, and Mr. l.atham was well set when he was bowled. But at the close of play 3 wickets were down for 140, and things looked pretty bad. Ranjitsinhji, however, who had played another fine innings, was still in, with 48 runs to his credit. He brought his score within sight of the hundred and was then bowled. With his downfall the prospects of the Yorkshiremen winning rose a hundred per cent., and although Vine and Killick in partnership, there were 6 wicketa down for 25)—only 89 runs on. Two more wickets fell soon after lunch, and 8 wickets was down for 293. Things were getting very serious when Butt joined Vine, but the two professionals proved more than equal to the occasion, and Yorkshire had the impossible task of making 168 in an hour. Vine played admirable, but necessarily slow, cricket for three hours and twenty- five minutes. Y orksh ire . F. S. When play ended on Friday night the Kent team seemed very likely it deed to avenge its defeat a week or two ago by Warwickshire at Birmingham, for after playing an innings of 420 they had disposed of their visitors for 120 and got two of their wickets down in the second innings for 152, so that Warwickshire, with eight wickets in hand, still required 158runs to avoid the single innings defeat. The successful bowler was Alec Hearne, who had one of his best days of the season. The success of the Kent batsmen was chiefly due to brilliant cricket by Rashleigh and Mason, who came together with the score at 185 for four wickets, and put on 182 during their partnership in about an hour and three-quarters without giving the least chance. Their all-round cricket was delightful to watch. Previously to this Burnup and T. N. Perkins had enjoyed a partnership of 101 runs. The other batsmen did very little, except that Day played good cricket for 31. The innings closed just before stumps were drawn. On Friday the Warwickshire batsmen crumpled up before Alec Heame, but Lilley played a fine innings. In the follow on they did much better, Lilley and W. G. Quaife being not out 65 at the close of the day. The game was delayed several times while they were togeiher for reasons which seemed hardly adequate. On Saturday the innings was prolonged by tatting of a pronounced “ barn-door” style until about four o’clock. K en t . C. J.
