Cricket 1899
376 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ug . 31, 1899. Grace’s X I at the Crystal Palace. Although he will not be qualified for Somersetshire until next June the Aus tralian captain kindly allowed him to represent the county in last week’s match. A short time before it will be remembered Darling raised no objection to Llewellyn playing against them in the Hampshire match. Braund, like Llew ellyn, met with great success for, going in first, he scored eighty-two and with Bernard (ninety-four) helped to make a hundred and fifty-two before the first wicket fell. In Mr. Bernard Somerset shire have evidently discovered a batsman far above the average, for he has made excellent scores against all sorts of bowl ing. In addition to the large stand made by Braund and Bernard last week’s match will be remembered on account of Laver’s innings of a hundred and forty- three, his first three-figure innings in this country in a great match. (He made 101 not out for Esher v. Thames Ditton on May 6.) Laver, who has been member for some years of the East Melbourne team, will chiefly be remem bered on account of his score of 352 not out against St. Kilda in Febiuary, 1893. For many years he has been a most consistent scorer in club cricket in Mel bourne, averaging 52'77 an innings in 1895-6, 26-60 in 1896-7 and 55 33 in 1897-8. Last season, however, was his great season, for in addition to making 126 not out v. St. Kilda, 171 v. Fitzroy, and 114 v. Hawksburn he scored 137 not out for Victoria v. South Australia at Melbourne and 136 for Rest of Australia v. the Australia Eleven for England at Sydney. Laver, whose style is rather ungainly, is a really fine batsman and can generally be relied upon when his side is in need of runs. It is a matter of sur prise that he has not made more than one century in great matches in this country, but perhaps he will treat us to another next week at Hastings. It is a fact worth mentioning that in three consecutive innings Darling and Iredale whilst together added over a hundred runs for the sixth wicket, as follows: — 101, Iredale (54*) and Darling (41*) v. Gloucestershire, at Cheltenham; 201, Iredale (111) and Darling (111) v. Middle sex, at Lord’s; 119, Iredale (53) and Darling (96) v. Somersetshire, at Tauuton. The poor form shown of late by the Lancashire team prepared one to see them defeated by Surrey at the Oval, but the severity of the defeat came quite as a surprise, for in past years Lancashire have generally shown their best form on the Oval. The Surrey victory by an innings and over a hundred runs must be chiefly attributed to the fine stand made by Abel and Lockwood for the fifth wicket. The partnership realised 287 runs after four wickets had fallen before the total had reached 90. Mr. Jephson scored his first century of the season, and Brockwell, when he obtained his third wicket in the match, caused his name to be added to the list cf those cricketers who have scored over a thousand runs and lowered more than a hundred wickets in one season in first- class matches. W ith the exception of Mr. Eccles nobody seemed to play the Surrey bowling with any confidence. The change in the weather has had a wonderful effect on the scoring during the past three days, and whereas a week or so ago batsmen made their centuries with comparative ease, they now have to rest content with far smaller scores. Mr. F ry’s innings against’ Hampshire, at Portsmouth, is one of the best he has yet played, and worthy to be ranked with any batting display seen this season. THE FIRST-CLASS AVERAGES.
