Cricket 1899

A u g . 24, 1899. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 369 shire were not done with yet, and, thanks to fine cricket by Wainwright and Lord Hawke, and a useful stand by Haigh, the total had been brought to 208 for the loss of seven tickets tefor* stumps were drawn. Thus Yorkshire, with three wickets in hand, were 3 runs on. Although the outlook was practi cally hopeless. Lord Hawke and Wainwright made such a splendid stand that after all Kent hid to go in to mike 121. The partnership produced 113 runs. Thanks to another brilliant innings by Burnup Kent won very easily. Y o r k s h ir e First innings. F. S. Jackson, b Mason ... 1 Tunnicliffe,cHearne,bMason 0 Denton, c Huish, b Mason... 0 F. All day on Monday Notts were at the tickets, scaring rapidly on the who.e, and making a total of 3S3 for the loss of five men. Everybody wh >went in plajed a good inniDgs. Mr. Jones was in his best form and made his 61 runs in an hour and five minutes. It seemed on the cards that Shrewsbury and Gunn would once more make one of their very long partnerships, for they took complete charge of the bowling after they had played themselves in. The arrival of Storer upon the tcene as a bowler broke up the partnership, which produced 93 runs, and Gunn was disappointed of getting bis hundred, but he played a great innings, as did Mr. Goodacre and Mr. Dixon. Again on Tuesday, everybody except the not out scored, but when the innings closed for a very large total it looked as if Derbyshire might be able to make a draw, for the Notts bowling is not very powerful. Der'r yshire began well enou h and Mr. Wrighs played a splendid inniDgs, while Walter Sugg was in flee form. The tail played up nobly, but a follow-on was necessary. The second innings was a fight against time, and Mr. Evershed, Storer and Walter Sugg all did more than their share in helping to tave their county. N o tts . A. O. [Wo are inclined to think that the following correspondence must have reached us by mistake.] To the Editor of C r ic k e t . D e a r S ir ,— I can’t for the life of me understand what all this rot about drawn games means. My club never plays drawn matches. Yours truly, M . SM ITHERS, Captain of the Hackney Marshes Bounders. D e a r S ir,— If some important altera tions were made to do away with drawn games, as so many of your correspondents seem to desire, it is quite evident that neatly all the matches will be finished in two days—you can’t arrange so that the alteration, whatever it may be, will bring every match to a conclusion at about twenty-five minutes past six on the Wednesday or Saturday. And if there is very seldom any cricket on these days what on earth are we to do for reading when the next morning’s papers come out ? Yours obediently, ONE WHO GOES TO MATCHES W H EN EV ER HE CAN GET A D A Y OFF AND A SPARE S IXPENCE . Total ...681 D ear S ir ,—-I am decidedly of opinion that the strongly-expressed wish of so many people that something should be done to abolish drawn games ought to be attended to by the authorities. Here am over and over again obliged to ba in attendance at the county matches which take place in my town until half-past six on the third evening, when if some method were adopted to shorten the game, I could be far better employing my time in writing accounts about lovely flower-shows and garden-parties.
