Cricket 1899
A u g . 24, 1899. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME 36 Richardson, who accompanied the team to Taunton, although he did not play. All day on Thursday Surrey were at the wickets, making 370 runs for the loss of 7 wickets, Lockwood being not out 88. Once more they lost a man through “ runout” whenhe was absolutely master of the bowling, the victim being Hayward, who was at the wickets for three hours and three-quarters, having scored his third hundred in successive innings. The turning point of the innings was his partnership with Lockwood, which produced 173 runs in a couple of hours; until Lockwood joined him the county had not done very well—indeed at the commencement of the innings Bayes, Brockwell, and Pretty were all out for 44. On Friday morning Lockwood and Lees put on 113 runs in an hour and twenty minutes ; the former was at the wickets 8bout the same time as Hayward. By the end of the day Somerset had scored 295runs for the loss of 7wickets, thus having just a possibility of saving the follow on. The cricket throughout the innings was very even. Everybody scored double figures, and the only large scores were the 73 of Woods and the 53 of Phillips, whose partnership of 126 runs in an hour upset the Surrey Dowling very considerably and enabled the rest of the side to shew up well. Captain Hedley and Newton did so well on Saturday morning that the follow on was nearly saved, only another 20 runs being required. They began their second innings at about one o'clock, so that there was a chance that the game might be concluded. Steadily Surrey began to gain the upper hand until, when six wickets were down for 167—only 16 runs on—victory not only seemed possible but almost certain. ButChallenand Daniell stayed for about three-quarters of an hour, which made things look much better for Somerset, and then an hour’s determined cricket by Newton and Daniell upset everything. When the match ended Somerset were 174 runs on with a wicket in hand, so that they got out of their difficulties ex ceedingly well. S u brey . H. C. Bromley Martin was two hours and a half in making his first fifty runs, but made ample amends for his slowness after wards. H. K. Foster’s innings was remarkable for brilliant play all round thewicket. When the innings was resumed on Friday morning, the field began to drop catches, and the more they dropped the more boldly did the batsmen hit, with the result that the Derbyshire men became completely disorganised. Lowe’s hundred was made in an hour and thirty-five minutes. The Derbyshire men, after their long outing, were unable to show any resistance of moment against the bowling of Burrows, and at the close of the second day’s play they had lost nine wickets for their second innings and were still 277 runs behind. The Worcestershire captain suggested that it would be as well to finish the match at once, but Mr. Wright, the Derbyshire captain, declined to take the responsibility. A good many runs were added on Saturday morning, but the Worcestershire captain, with victory assured, allowed some of his amateurs to try their inexperienced hands with the ball. W orcestersh ire . DERBYSHIRE. Played at Worcester on Aug. 17,18 and 19. Worcestershire won by an innings and 218 runs. Once more the ingenuity of a Derbyshire captain was taxed to the utmost when his side were in the field, for there were hardly any bowlers on whom he could rely to take a wicket or two. The Worcester shire men made the best of their opportunity, and scored runs with a rapidity which was refreshing. At the end of the first day they had made 426 for the loss of ten wickets. The commencement of the innings was a great contrast to the end. Nearly two hours were taken up in making the first 70 runs, W.L.Foster, c Chatter ton, b Bestwick ... 10 G.
