The visitors were not seen to very great advantage on Monday, while at the close of play Gloucettershire, without losing a wicket, had put on 106 runs, Mr. Champain being not out 72 and Mr. Rice not out 33. Champain played splendid ciicket on Tuesday morn ing, and was w«?ll backed up by several others of the team. Mr. Troup played an invaluable innings of over a hundred, and when Warwickshire went in again they stood a very good chance of being defeated. In the second innings Devey and Diver played very fine cricket and the i .ninga’ defeit was saved. W A\W ICK8H IBK. First innings. It was a weak Yorkshire team which was put in the field on Monday, for F. S. Jackson, Denton, Rhodes, Lord Hawke and the two Browns were all absent. But in E. R. W ilson, T. L. Taylor, Lees Whitehead, and Pollitt, a new professional who has been doing well at Hitchin, they had men who were likely to give a good account of themselves. But if Yorkshire suffered from the absence of some of their best men the loss of Major Poore, not to mention Captain Bradford, was simply ruinous to them—the two officers having to return to their military duties. The Yorkshiremen kept their opponents in the field all day on Monday, scoring 445 for the loss of eight wickees. Hirst followed up his fine innings at the Oval by scoring another hundred, and Mr. Ernest Smith played his highest and best inni r gs of the season. Each man was at the wickets for about two hours and a half, and they put on 183runs in partnership in an hourand fifty-four minutes. When the bowling was quite worn out Pollitt made a most successful debut and Lees Whitehead made runs very rapidly. The innings soon came to a conclusion on Tuesday and the Hampshire men, handicapped by rain, did better than could have been expected. Captain Wynyard played splendid cricket for 77, and Captain Palmer for 64. At close of play nine wickets had fallen for 281. Yesterday Yesterday Captain Wynyard again played a very steady innings, and Webb distinguished himself. Y o r k s h ir e . E. R.
