Cricket 1899

A ug . 1 0, 1899. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 331 RUUBY v. MARLBOROUUH. Played at Lord’s on August 3 and 4. Marlborough won by 225 runs. So infiuitely superior as a batsman is R. H. Spooncr, the Marlborough captain, to the rest of the players, that his two innings comnletely dwarfed everything else in the match. It was a pity that he just failed to reach his second hundred in the second innings, but from about a-quarter of an hour before he was out he completely altered his style of batting in his anxiety to make sure of accomplishing the feat. He was out to a very pretty catch at mid-off through playing for ward to a ball which in the earlitr part of his innings he would have hit to the boundary. He was batting for three hours and a-half for his 198 and hardly made a mistake. He is qualified for Lan cashire, and as he has the mak ngs of a first-class cricketer he may be heard of in the future. At present he strikes one as being likely to fall a victim to a bowler with plenty of brains as well as accuracy, but experience would make a vast difference to him. In the management of the b o w liD g he showed great judgment and followed the methods of the Austra lians in not being afraid to take off a man when he was bowling well if he thought another man would do belter. Napier is the most promising of the Marl borough bowlers, who all work with their head; he is at present slow medium with a faster ball, which he keeps much too short—a fault common to all the bowlers on either side—but he varies his pace with much judgment, and, while keeping a good length, is not afraid to try experiments. Another promising bowler is Gibson—slow left-hand, with a good deal of variety. Spooner himself has a very fair idea of bow ling; he is a slow leg-break bowler —a little too slow—with a very fast ball, which is at present not under his control The Rugby boys would have done well enough if Spooner had not teen opposed to them. Grenside seemei to be the best bat, but Parton, Johnson, and Hannay are all determined cricketers who are likely to make runs. The bowling was not remarkable, but Dillon, who bats left and bowls right, has the makings of a good man. He is, at present, like Spooner, too slow, while his fast ball is much too ehort, and he tos'es the ball too high in the air—faults which can very easily be remedied. R u g b y . First innings.
