The Grove School team won the toss, and there was A S H R IL L S H R IE K from their supporters when Miss N. Figgis and Miss Greenwood came out to start the innings. Both were attired in comely white dresses reaching to j ust above their ankles, and both disdained such masculine weak nesses as gloves and pads. Almost before the game was begun Miss Figgis found the boundary with a terrific drive. But she was unfortunately out just as the spectators were settling down to see Trott out-Trotted. Then there came in the champion of the Grove School team, Miss Mary Norman, and she didn’t get out; she had come in with other intentions. In orderthat Dr. Fletcher’s team should not be too strong, several male creatures had been included. There were five of them. These gentlemen bowled for all they were worth at Miss Norman. But she treated all their efforts with contempt. She cut them, and drove them, and, when opportunity offered, pulled them. Her cut ting reminded one of Jack Shuter; her defencewas quite the equal of Willie Quaife’s; and her attitude at the wicket between the overs was reminiscent of W. W . Read at his best. Only one thing was she deficient in, she wasn’t as good as Ranji on the leg side. Paradox though it may appear, RANJl’ s GLAN CES are prettier than Miss Norman’s. Miss Norman is known among her school fellows as “ Monkey,” a name which she shares with another great cricketer. She went in first wicket down, and was out last but one with a faultless 28 to her credit, made in the course of about three hours. Her hits were two 3’s, three 2’s, and sixteen singles, most of the latter being brilliant cuts towards third woman. The first innings of the Grove School amounted to 99, towards which Miss Gwen Figgis contributed a dashing 17. The field ing of Dr. Fletcher’s team was excellent throughout the innings. Never in the future let it be said that ladies can’t throw. Some of them onSaturday threw in to such purpose that the ball passed several yards over the wicket-keeper’s head. A word of praise is due to the wicket keeper. There is only one point in which she compares unfavourably with oth^r first- class wicket-keepers. She doesn’t knock the bails off whenever she takes the ball, and appeal while the umpire puts them on again. This is the proper thing to do. During the Grove School innings the S K IR T -B E F O R E -W IC K E T rule was not too rigidly enforced. This was possibly because the umpire at the bowler's end stood about ten yards wide of the wicket, and was not in a position to see. It appears from Saturday’s play that skirls are of immense assistance in stopping a hard drive. Cannot some of the members of the Surrey team see their way to adopt them? Moreover at the wicket it is almost impossible to be bowled round your legs if you wear a skirt. Another useful tip is to let your hair grow long. It is a much better excuse than the sun in your eyes for a missed catch. GRANVILLE (Lee) v. BECKENHAM.—Played at Beckenham on July 26. G r a n v il l e .
