CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE CAME. A ug . 3, 189&. KENT v. ESSEX. Played at Leyton on July 27, 28 and 29. Essex won by 8 wickets. W ith all their bowlers, except Kortright, available, Essex were stronger than they have been of late, while Kent managed to put a tine team in the field. Previous experiences of the Leyton wicket this year pointed to an up-hill game for Essex when the Kent batsmen put on 210 in their first innings, thanks almost entirely to Mason, Day and Le Fleming, who made between them 191 runs out of 233 from the bat. Mason and Day were in great form, and put on 125 for the second wicket. The commencement of the Essex innings was not at all encouraging, but when Perrin and McGahey were together there was a mosi valuable stand, and A . J. Turner, who followed, helped Perrin to bring the total well in advance of that of Kent. Perrin and Turner are both in admirable form at the present time, and they gave a splendid exhibition of batting. If the tail had not failed, Kent would most likely have been beaten in an innings, for with the exception of Mason, Burnup and Le Fleming, two of whom had scored well in the first innings, the batsmen could do nothing with Young and Mead. Alec Hearne, most consistent of batsmen, made a couple of ducks in the match. That there was nothing wrong with the wicket was plainly shewn when Essex went in to knock off the 144 runs required to win, for Carpenter, Ayres, Perrin and McGahey all scored without difficulty. The services of Bull were very useful to Essex in this match. K en t . First innings. Second innings. J. It. The Worcestershire batsmen were very greatly in luck’s way to catch the Hampshire bowlers imme diately after they had been in the field against War wickshire while more than six hundred runs had been made in an incompleted innings, and although it cannot be said that as a team they made any use of their opportunities, two of the brothers Foster were a’ive to the situation. Each of them made a hundred in the first innings, and each of them repeated the feat in the second innings, thus creating an entirely new record. Their batting was most attractive, and the wearied bowlers could do absolutely nothing with them in either innings. Buf the rest of the team con tented themselves with very moderate scores. But Worcestershire did not by any means have matters all their own way, for Major Poore was just as severe on the bowlers of the home team as the Fosters had been on those of Hampshire. He was at the wickets for three hours, played faultless cricket, brought his total to over a thousand runs, and scored his sixth hundred of the season in first-class cricket. Hampshire had to play for a draw, and suited their batting to the occasion. W o rcestersh ire . First inniDgs. Second innings. W . L. NOTTS. Played at Old Trafford on July 27, 28 and 29. Lancashire won by 84 runs. A good deal of the success of Lancashire in this match is to be attributed to the fine bow li.g of Sharp, who, on a wicket which was never altogether in favour of the batsmen after the first day, took eight wickets in the two innings for 56 runs, fcmith, the Lancashire wicket-keeper, also had a fine record for uhe match, for he was responsible for the dismissal of seven men, while he made scores of 26 and 13 not out. There was nothing very remarkable in the Lancashire batting in either innings except the play of Ward and Cuttell. Notts seemed to be altogether out of it until W . Gunn, who went in very late for him, gave one of his perfect exhibitions of scientific batting, and by scoring 116 at a very critical time gave his side a much better chance of coming out of the match with credit. It was hardly thought that Notts would get the 216 required to win when they went in on Satur day, for the wicket was not so good as it had been, and very little surprise was expressed when Lanca shire won very easily indeed.
