Cricket 1899
312 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ug . 3, 1899. Oval in September, 1865, in a match between Eight een Gentlemen of the Surrey Club and the United South of England Eleven. In the second innings of the latter, Jupp was well set, when Mr. E. M. Grace went on to bowl, his chief aim appearing to be to drop the ball on the top of the wicket. Jupp did not attempt to combat this vertical movement, and the elevated ball went over his head untouched. Mr. Grace persisted, and Jupp was pitched out. This was a signal for venting sibilations and other forms of expression not exactly in harmony with the boasted character istics of a cricket field. The crowd broke in and howled, and hissed, and hooted, and E.M . was obliged to pull up one of the stumps in self-defence. It was « curious sight; E. M . Grace stood in the middle of the ground with a stump in his hand, surrounded by the angry crowd, and remarked, “ The very first man who touches me will get this stump on his head.” Fortunately, nobody was courageous enough to interfere with the little doctor, who walked into the pavilion with the stump still in his hand. It was about three-quarters of an hour before the game could be resumed. This week I reproduce the score of a curious match which was played 14 years ago. As will be seen from the score the result was a double-tie :— RO YA L MUXS TER FU SILIERS v. TENBY.— A t Tenby, August 10 and 11,1885. R o y a l M u n ster F u silie r s . First innings. W . F.
