Cricket 1899

310 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ug . 3, 1899 partnerships with Gunn have been the despair of innumerable bowlers—more particularly Sussex bowlers— for neither Gunn nor Shrewsbury could ever be bustled into making a mistake. Unlike so many men who make big scores Shrewsbury is not by any means merely a good wicket batsman; there are not half-a-dozen men in the world who are more likely, even now, to make runs on a bad wicket. How he does it is more or less a mystery, but he seems to know instinctively the exact amount of break or devil which each ball is going to develop, and acts accordingly. A visitor to a cricket ground on which Shrewsbury is batting might enter at any time duriflg his inniDgs and (pro vided that there was no scoiing board), might exercise his ingenuity in vain to guess whether he has been in for five minutes or a couple of hours. If you bowl him three loose balls in his first over and two good ones, he will hit the three to the boundary and play the two carefully but easily, and he would do exactly the same thing if a similar over came five hours afterwards. He has made so many big scores that it would be impossible to say which is his finest innings, but his 164 for E d gland against Australia, at Lord’s, in 1886, would, by many good judges, be placed first. Of this innings Giffen says in his book “ Arthur Shrewsbury played a masterly innings, undoubtedly the best, though not the highest, hit against our bowling duiing the tour. The wicket was none too clever. It was a fiery Lord’s pitch, and most first-class batsmen know what that meats, but his defence was perfect, and he played all the bowling as though it were simple as A B C.” Could anj batsman want a higher tribute to his skill ?
