Played at Old Trafford on July 24, 25 and 26. Lancashire won by 8 wickets. Another fine innings by Townsend, who has been remarkably consistent as a batsman this season, and some hard hitting by Jessop were the features of the Gloucestershire first innirgs. which was plsyed on a slow wicket. When Lancashire went in, Tyldesley was in splendid form, and, thanks chiefly to Mm, his side were in a satisfactory position at the erd of the day—three wickets were down for 120. Tyldesley just failed to reach his hundred on Tuesday morning; but Eccles played a very pretty innings, which included some excellent I its. Lancaster also showed fine cricket. The Gloucestershire batting in the second in ings was disappointing, but Champain made a gallant attempt to p!ace his side on a better footing. G lou cestersh ire . First innings. Second innings. F. HAMPSHIRE v. WARWICKSHIRE. Played at Edgbaston on July 24, 25, and 26. Abandoned. It was by no means certain that Captain Wynyard was well advised to choose first innings when he won the toss, for it was impossible to tell whether the wicket was likely to improve or not. But thanks to excellent and determined batting, combined with poor fielding and weak bowling, Hampshire played a very fine innings. A . J. L. Hill had a good deal of luck in making his 168. but he played the right game, and is to be congratulated on a splendid performance. W ith Captain Wynyard as a partner he made the stanl of the innings; it lasted for an hour and three-quarters, and produced 176 runs. WyDyard was missed when he had made 6, and then began to play in his very best form, which is as good as can be wished for. Soar also played excellent cricket, hit ting with some boldness. It was fortunate for Warwickshire that Lilley did not miss stumping Major Poore, who had played very pretty cricket, and was beginning to be very dangerous. A t the end of the day Warwickshire had put on 6 without losing a wicket, and on Tuesday most of their men weie in form, and the score advanced more rapidly than usual. Kinnier, who made his first appearance of the season in the team, played a splendid innings. The Hampshire bowlers were powerless on a wicket which had b*come excellent, and when stumps were drawn Warwickshire were six runs behind, with half their wickets in hand, Quaife and Fi hwick having played splendid cricket A remarkable exhibition was given by the Warwickshire men yesterday. Mr. Ba nbridge was in brilliant form, and showed the test cricket of the day. while Quaife went steadily on—not too steadily. The climax was reached when Mr. Glover joined Quaife, and the bowling became hopelessly ineffective. Glover playei beautiful cricket. Quaife was batting six hours and a-haif, and he hardly made a mistake. Hamp-hire were doing well when rain came down. H am psh ire . C. Heseltine, b Ban- tall ........................... R. A.
