Cricket 1899

J u l y 27, 1899. C R IC K E T : A W E E K L Y R E C O R D O F T H E G A M E 299 DERBYSHIRE v. LEICESTERSHIRE. Played at Chesterfield on July 20, 21 and 22. Abandoned. A remarkable innings of 216 by Storer was the feature of this match. He went in first wicket down, and at the end of the first day's play was not out 216, while the total made by his county was 388 for nine wickets. This was v» ry satisfactory indeed after a bad beginning, in which four wickecs fell for 53 and five for 9 1. Storer had no opportunity of increasing his score on Friday, as Bestwick, the other not out, was not on the ground ready to continue his innings when play began. Storer was batting for five hours and a quarter, and his innings was the highest he has ever played. The Leicestershire men gave a very fine exhibition of the game, but were 88 runs behind on Friday evening at the close of play with two wickets in hand. This pointed to a drawn game, even if rain had not come down and caused play to be abandoned. D er b ysh ir e . L.G.W right, c White side, b G eeson.........20 G. Played at Lord’s on July 20 and 21. Minor Counties won by nine wickets. In this match Sir T. C. O’Brien made one of his now rare appearances, and showed conclusively enough that he has not lost his form by playing a splendid innings of 95 in two hours and twenty minutes. Another fine innings for the M.C.C. was played by Mr. A. B. Reynolds, while Mr. C. W . W right and Mr. F. E. Lacey appeared for the club with success. Mr. Lacey looked like playing one of his attractive and long innings. On the side o f the Counties Mr. H. J. Bill, of Hertfordshire, showed to very great advantage; his innings of 153 not out was the feature of the match. Mr. Hill made many remarkably good hits. and it is a pity that he does not get a chance of playing in first-class cricket. He made his runs in the short time of two hours and ten minutes, and 104 of them were made by 4’s. M.C.C. First innings. C. W . Wright, c Hayward,b b White .......................... 42 D. C.
