Cricket 1899

296 C R IC K E T : A W E E K L Y R E C O R D OP T H E G A M E J u l y 27, 1899 Somersetshire, with 70 against Warwick shire, has met with greater success than ever before. Mr. E. I. M. Barrett, who rendered great acsistance to the county last year, has recently been distinguishing himself in Malta. On June 1st, he made 122 for the Second Lancashire Fusiliers, against the Third Lancashire Fusiliers, and, fifteen days later, the enormous score of 308 against the Royal Engineers, which is a record for the island. Great credit is due to Alec Hearne, Braund and Hayes for their century scores against the Australians, to the last- mentioned especially, who made his runs when they were badly wanted. Hearne’s 168 is the largest score made against the present Australian team, beating J. T. Browne’s 367 at Bradford by one run. Hearne and Braund, whilst to gether last Thursday, added 242 runs for the third wicket, which is a record part nership against Australian bowling in eleven a-side matches, the previous best being 241 by Maurice Read (186) and Abel (144) for the fourth wicket of Surrey, at the Oval, in July, 1886. After Hayes’ innings, and Trumble’s bowling (eight wickets for 35) in the first innings of Surrey, the most striking feature of the match, which ended yesterday in a victory for the county by over 100 runs, was the fine fielding of the Australians, especially of Trumper, Worrall and Jones, the latter fielding on Tuesday afternoon in place of Iredale, who was unwell. The fielding of our teams is very, very poor, when com pared with that of the Australians, who are as keen and active in the field when the fiist ball of the match is sent down as Englishmen are when the last man is in, and one run is wanted to tie, and two to win. Fielding is as important a branch of the game as batting end bowling, yet Englishmen, for some reason which is difficult to understand, will give neither time nor trouble in order to make themselves proficient. Noble at point is perfection, and his fielding in that position on Monday and Tuesday last was greatly appreciated by the spectators who frequently showed their delight in no half-hearted manner. One enthusiastic old gentleman in the pavilion described it as “ the poetry of motion and champagne of equilibiiumism ! ! ” It is sad to bear that Harry Trott, who earned such praise for his fieldiDg at point during previous tours, is in the Kew Lunatic Asylum, Yarra Bend, in Australia, and that not the slightest hopes are entertained of his recovery. He is suffering from general paralysis, and it is said the end is not far off. It was in the Kew Asylum that poor Midwinter breathed his last in December, 1890. The form of the Middlesex men during the past week has been surprising, con sidering the wonderful victories they had been gaining previously. But for the rain they would have been hand somely thrashed by Yorkshire on Satur day, and they were very fortunate to have the game left unfinished. Although they were afterwards easily beaten by Sussex at Hastings, there is certain to be a large crowd to-day at Lord’s, for the meeting of Middlesex and Surrey always produces a keen struggle. But with Hayward back in the team and Lockwood bowling well again, Surrey should manage to win. LONDON SCOTTISH v. CHARLTON PARK .- Played at Brondesbury on July 22. L ondon S co ttish . W .
