J u l y 20, 1899. for if the Australians gained a victory it would put the home team altogether out of the running, as only one more game — that at the Oval—would be down for decision. As everybody knows by this time the match ended in a draw. The first innings of each side commenced in rather sensational fashion, England losing four wickets for forty-seven runs, and half the Australian side being dismissed with only thirty-five runs scored. When it seemed quite possible that the home side would collapse, Hayward came in and played a beautiful innings for 130—the innings of his life. His display was absolutely free from chance, and lasted four hours and a-quarter. He was fortunate in finding a batsman to keep in with him, Lilley following up his scores of 61 and 62 against Yorkshire with a splendid effort of 58, helping Hayward to add 113 runs for the seventh wicket. In the end the innings closed for 372—an excellent total considering the bad com mencement—Young and Mr. Bradley both making useful scores, and increasing the total by 35 runs after the fall of the ninth wicket. On the second day the Australians collapsed before the deliveries of Mr. Bradley and Young, and were all dismissed for 196, which necessitated a follow-on. Noble appeared to be the only batsman who could meet the bowl ing with any confidence, and his score of 60 not out was of far more value to his side than the figures would indicate. Mr. Bradley bowled excellently, and followed up his score of 23 not out by obtaining five wickets for 67 runs, his victims being Laver, Worrall, Iredale, Trumble, and Howell. In the follow-on Noble again played a very valuable innings, and with Worrall scored 93 for the first wicket. It was chiefly owing to this pair that when stumps were drawn the Australians had scored 142 for the loss of but two men, thus being only 34 runs behind with eight wickets in hand. Yesterday the Australians played a very slow though cor rect game under the circumstances, and succeeded in making an honourable draw. Chief credit for this is due to Noble who played a very patient innings for 89, which took five hours and twenty minutes to compile. In the two innings he was at the wickets nine hours and a-half for 149 runs—a performance worthy of Scotton at his best. The fact that England came out of the encounter with so much credit will invest the match at the Oval with very great interest. CLAP TON v. TOTTENHAM .—Played at Clapton on July 15. C la pto n . J.
