In the absence of Shrewsbury, A. O. Jones, J. Dixon, J. Gunn, Oates, and Attewell the county was so poorly represented that it is unnecessary to refer to the match except to say that Wrathall was in splendid form , and made 115 in three hours, 1hat Geeson and Dench bowled uncommonly well, and that there were 38 byes in the M .C.C score. KENT v. MIDDLESEX. Played at Maidstone on July 6, 7 and 8. Kent won by 30 runs. It is not altogether an unusual thing for a visiting team to go to pieces on a cricket ground in Kent, as Yorkshire and Surrey men would readily admit, and therefore Middlesex cannot have been entirely taken by surprise. The match was practically fought out in the last two innings, for after each side had played a first innings there was only a difference of three runs between them. On the first day rain interrupted play, and there was only time for Kent to make 132 for six wickets, which was not a bad start, as it was almost certaia that the wicket would become more difficult as the game progressed. The second day was eventful. To begin with, the remaining four Kent wickets only put on 32 runs ; then Middlesex, afttr beginning very well, suddenly collapsed. L . J. M oon played a very fine innings, and Hayman and F. G. J. Ford also did well for their side. A t the end o f the day Kent had lost nine wickets and were only 80 runs on, no one 8coriDg except Alec Hearne (who has hardly ever failed this season) and Knowles. This pointed to a fairly ea^y victory for Middlesex, but on Saturday the bowlers had much the best of it, and the batsmen, with the exception of Ford, who hit finely, showed a timidity which was fatal, with the result that Kent won a well-earned victory. Mason and Bradley bowled splendidly, and the fielding was brilliant. K e n t . First innings. Second innings. Lancashire won by an innings and 47 runs. The most noticeable points about this match were the breakdown of the Somerset batting on a *ood wicket and the excellent bowling of W ebb and Lancaster.
