Cricket 1899

It may be that before the end of the season comes he will have tired as he did in 1896, but at present he seems more active and lively every day. As a field he still has the reputation of being brilliant, more particularly at mid- off, while as a batsman he has improved a little. It is true that when he has been sent in early to knock the bowling about when his side has been in difficulties he has always failed to come off, but this may happen to the best of batsmen. But on several occa sions he has been of great use to his side, and once or twice has played a really fln=* innings. It is not on record that he has ever scored a hundred in any kind of match, but in a first-class match he once made within eighteen of the hundred. This was in 1898, when he made 82 for South Australia against New South Wales at Adelaide. This season he has three times scored over fifty, viz., 55 against Derbyshire, 54 against An England X I., at Eastbourne, and 53 against Cambridge University. His only other innings above fifty in first-class matches are, 66 not out for South Australia against Vic toria at Adelaide in 1895, and 66 for South Australia against Victoria at Mel bourne in 1898. Once in his life he fell a victim to his good nature for, wishing to save the Victorians trouble, he re moved a ball which he had played into his breast pocket and was promptly given out for “ handling ball.” Over and over again he had done remarkable perfor mances with the ball, on the very best of wickets as well as on bad ones. It was but natural, that, with the dearth of fast bowlers in England, rumours should have been circulated that, like Albert Trott and Roche, he had been engaged to qualify for a county, and in 1896 about half the cricketing world was convinced that he was going to remain in Sussex— that county being at that time more in need of a fast bowler than any other. Again this year the rumour has been cir culated that he has accepted an offer from Sussex, and again the truth of it has been flatly denied by him. W . A. B e t t e s w o r t h .
