Then Day once more played brilliant cricket, and when he was joined by Taylor the Ox ford b o ilin g was completely mastered. They trium phantly went on iheir way until time was up, when they had both succeeded in making their 50. It was a splendid finish to the game. Day was undoubtedly the hero of the match. O x fo r d . This was one of the most curious matches of the Australian tour. Notts had made 61 for the loss of a wicket on Monday, when tain came down, and the game was adjourned until Tuesday. Then Shrewsbury and Dixon played splendid cricket, tut the tail collapsed. The total seemed large enough, for the wicket was queer, but the Australians did not consider the bowling sufficiently formidable to offer any excuse for a collapse, and they kept in without hut rying until the close of the day, losiD g only three wickets for 106. They were thus 82 runs behind, and so flD e ly did Noble and Trumper play that their captain was able to declare when seven wickets were down. At this time his side was only 46 runs on, but he was not running much risk, for he had another innings in prospect, and might possibly g e t rid of the Notts men for a very small score. For a time it seemed m oie than likely that his manoeuvre would meet with well- merited success, for Notts, despite good cricket by Shrewsbury, did very badly against Trumble, and lost 6 wickets for 77 runs —only 31 to d s on. But when Goodaore and Gunn got together a stand was made which placed defeat out of the question—the former playing very fine cricket indeed. When Goodacre had made his 50, and the score had been taken lo 132 without further loss (Notts being 86 runs on), the Notts captain returned the compliment and declared his innings, although there seemed no possibility of finishing the match. There was a good deal of method in this move, for if the innings had been continued a collapse might have ensued, and Notts might have appeared lucky to escape defeat, while when the inninsrs was declared the Australians viiyht have lost a wicket or two. As it was, Darling went in first himself, and let his hitters have a chance at the other end. The result was disastrous, and Notts came out of the match with flying colours. N o tts . First innings.
