Cricket 1899

250 C R IC K E T : A W E E K L Y R E C O R D O F T H E G A M E J uly 6, 1899 four o f their best men for 88 runs. Unfortunately for the visitors one of the not outs was Major Poore, who on the next morning soon found out all he wanted to know about the quality of the bowling (which was weakened by Lockwood’s inability to do much owing to a renewed strain), and then proceeded to make runs in a most attractive manner. Captain Wynyard, who has not been himself this season, seemed to have got very well set when he was out, and Heseltine helped the Major considerably. But most o f the scoring was done Ly Poore himself. He was the last man on the side to be out, af t* r having batted for four hours. It was a splendid innings. Surrey had the unpleasant experience of going in again with a balance of 113 against thun, and at the end o f the day they were still 31 runs behind with only six wickets in hand. They made a plucky effort on Saturday to retrieve an almost hopeless position, but although rain came it did not come at the right time for them. S u b b e y . First innings. Second innings. D. L.
