Cricket 1899
248 C R IC K E T : A W E E K L Y R E C O R D O F T H E G A M E . J u l y 6, 1899. for 150 runs, it appeared very probable that the Dark Blues would be able to claim a lend on the first innings. Thanks to the efforts of Day and Hind, however, the total eventually reached 241, or 49 runs in advance of the Oxford aggregate. Hind, who was only chosen as eleventh man at the last moment, rendered great service to his side both with bat and ball. The second portion of the match was noteworthy for Pilkington’s fine innings, which practically made his side safe from defeat, for the brilliant hitting by Jessop, and for the splendid stand made by Day and Taylor. 8URBITON v. S ir , —Your correspondent, “ An Old Har rovian,” has hardly done justice to the late Mr. J. H. Kirwan in describing him only as “ a very fast bowler.” He was one of the most successful bowlers of his too short day, and performed some remarkable feats. In the Eton v. Harrow match of 1834 he bowled down ten Harrow wickets, and possibly one was caught off him. In the Winchester match of that year he bowled eight (seven in one innings), and there were three catches. In 1835, playing for Eton v. M.C.C., he bowled four in the first innings, and ten in the second, the total runs off the bat in this innings being 104. In the match with Harrow he bowled thirteen, the total of runs off the bat being 62. In the following year he was at Cambridge, and playing against the Town Club, bowled fifteen wickets (nine in one innings). He did not play against Oxford either in this year or in 1838, and there was no match in 1837, but against M.C.C. in that year he took thirteen wickets (eight bowled in the Club’s first innings). In the Gentlemen and Players’ match he bowled four wickets. Scores and Biographies has a further note concerning him in Vol. v., p. xv., stating that he became rector of St. John’s, Cornwall, in 1874. Yours faithfully, June 30th, 1899. A. C. C o x h e a d . ABEL’S RECORDS. To the Editor of C r ic k e t . S ir , —Oh! those amateur statisticians! And o h ! those editors who insert their lucubra tions without troubling to verify them ! Like Shrewsbury, I am aweary, I am aweary. In Mr. P. Lousby’s list of the highest score made by Abel against the thirteen other counties there are no less than four errors ! His highest score against Derby is not 109, but 1,22 ; against Gloucester not 104 not out, but 110 ; against Middlesex not 136 not out, but 151 not ou t; against Sussex, not 156, but 197. He has not only made a century against all the other counties, which no one else has succeeded in doing, but he has made a century against every side with which Surrey plays. Here are some of his other records :—He has made more runs in first-class cricket than any other professional has done ; he has made the largest innings ever played by a professional; he is the only cricketer who ever made 2,000 runs four years in succession; he is one of the four (the others are Grace, Shrewsbury, and Gunn) who have made a century in the three great matches, England v. Australia, Players v. Gentlemen, and South v. North; he is the only professional cricketer who, in addition to making centuries in the above three matches has also made one for his county against Australia ; he was well ahead of any other cricketer in the averages against the last Australian eleven; he has made more centuries than any other professional cricketer except Shrewsbuxy, who has played nearly ten years longer. When the famous selection trio (who, when they have com pleted their labours, ought surely to join Bamum’s collection of human freaks) rejected Abel, I wrote to the editor of a daily sporting paper pointing out these facts, in the vain hope of raising a blush upon the pachyder matous cheeks of that astonishing trio, but my letter was consigned to the waste-paper basket. . . . Let us see if the present attempt is more successful. Yours faithfully, Sandgate, June 6th. G . L a c y . KENSINGTON PARK v. EM E R ITI.-P layed at St. Quintin’s Park on July 1. K ensington P a r k .
