Cricket 1899

23 2 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J une 2 9 , 1899. played between the two sides Lancashire have won fifteen, Somersetshire two, three have remained unfinished, and one was abandoned. Chief credit for the victory is due to S. M. J. Woods and J. L. Daniell, each exceeding the century. The former is in particularly good batting form just now, and is almost worth his place in an England eleven solely on that account. In the second innings of Lanca shire, whilst Baker and Sugg were together, three overs delivered by Tyler yielded 50 runs. In one over Baker hit two sixes and two fours, and in another Sugg sent the ball five times to the boundry. During the fifty- three minutes the two batsmen were together the score was increased by 127 runs, the stand being made for the fourth wicket. The result of the match between Essex and Derbyshire, at Leyton, was brought about by two men—Mr. L. G. Wright, who carried his bat right through the innings for 59 runs out of a total of 112, and Hulme, who obtained twelve wickets in the match at a cost of only 81 runs. Too much praise can not be given to Mr. Wright, who made his runs against excellent bowling at a time when nobody else could play it with any confidence. In the second innings of Derbyshire only Sugg, Bagshaw, and Kenward made double figures, and, curiously enough, each batsman exceeded the half-century. Of the twenty-six matches played between the two sides Essex have won eleven, Derbyshire ten, and five have been left unfinished. On page 119 of Vol. 2 of Scores and Bio graphies appears the score of a match between Surrey and Sussex, played at Godalming, in July, 1830. According to Mr. Haygarth, ‘ ‘ this is the first match ever played between Sussex and Surrey.” This statement, how ever, is hardly correct. The match is certainly the first between the two sides of which we possess the full score, but the two counties had met many years previously. Mr. Bishop, on page 88 of his admirable work entitled “ A Peep into the Past,” states, “ The earliest county match we know of was that in which Sussex played with Surrey, on Longdown, in October, 1752. No details are given either of the players or of their respective scores, but the result is thus recorded—*Surrey beat by about four score notches.’ ” Even this, however, is not the first recorded match between the two sides, for a short time ago the writer, whilst searching through old magazines, newspapers, etc., in the hope of unearthing something of interest dealing with the early history of the game, was fortunate enough to discover that Surrey and Sussex met three times in August, 1745, the first match being played in London and the other two on Moulsey Hurst and Berrv Hill, near Arundel. The results could not be obtained, and all that could be discovered about the games was that Richard Newland, uncle to Richard Nyren, played for Sussex, that the first game was played for 200 guineas, and that play commenced at twelve o’clock. It would be very interesting to know how many times the two counties have met. The scores of 90 matches are in existence, and of that number Surrey have won 54 and Sussex but 17, the remaining 19 being left unfinished. On account of space only slight reference can be made to the principal features of the present week’s cricket. It must, however, be stated (i) that previous to Tuesday last on no occasion had all the eleven members of one side scored as many as twenty runs apiece in one innings of a first-class match; (ii) that the partnership of Mason and Hearne against Nottinghamshire is a record for Kent; (iii) that, as in 1896, there were three separate centuries scored in one innings for the Australians against Derbyshire; (iv) that Wrathall’s score of 102 against Somerset shire is the first century he has ever made for his county; and (v) that the partnership of Brann and Ranjitsinhji is both the largest ever made for Sussex and the longest ever made against Surrey.
