Cricket 1899
218 CR ICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. J une 22, 189&. HAMPSHIRE t . LANCASHIRE. Played at Southampton on June 15,16 and 17. Lancashire won by 71 runs. After gaining a substantial lead on the first innings Hampshire allowed Lancashire to put on a big total, and on a wicket which helped the bowlers a little could not succeed in making the 246 runs required to win. For the third time in succession M ajor Poore scored over a hundred runs, and from the way in which he started in his second innings it was quite on the cards that he would accomplish the unprecedented feat of making four hundreds in succession. Mr. Robson played fine cricket in both innings, and Soar made two useful scores, but on the whole the batting was disappointing. The batting honours on the Lancashire side fell to Ward, Paul and Mr. Eccles, who all did particularly well in the second innings when the game was going against their county. W ard’s innings was of especial value. L a n c a sh ir e . First innings. Second innings. Still without W oodcock, and also without Coe, who hurt his hand just before the game began, Leicester shire made an excellent start against a Yorkshire team which was about the same as that which succeeded in making a draw with the Australians. Leicestershire kept at the wicket for the whole of the first day, Pougher making a score of 106 in about four hourB. The batting of most of the other men was good without being remarkable. On Friday the Yorkshiremen seemed at first to have struck a bad patch, for they lost Tunnicliffe, Brown, Denton and C. E. M. W ilson for just under a hundred runs, and were thus still nearly 200 behind. Then ensued a most valuable partnership between Mitchell and Wainwright which, lasting a little over three hours, produced 329 runs, so that Yorkshire were well ahead when it was brought to a conclusion. Mr. Mitchell only just failed to reach his second hundred; his 194 was made in 4} hours, while Wainwright took 8£ hours to make his 153, so that the spectators could not very well complain that the cricket was slow. After this Yorkshire were always playiDg a winning game. W hen stumps were drawn they were 178 runs on with four wickets in hand, and on Saturday morning the innings was at once declared. Wain wright bowled well when Leicestershire went in, but until he went on the home team seemed quite capable of making a draw. L eickstebshi & e . First innings. Second innibgs.
