Cricket 1899
208 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J une 15, 1899, MIDDLESEX v . KENT. A RECORD FOR THE TENTH W ICKET. Played at Lord's on June 12, 13 and 14. Middlesex won by 118 runs. It has not unfrequently happened that in dry wea ther the side which batted th>t at Lord’s has found the pace of the wicket very deceptive, and on Monday Middlesex showed that it was not only visiting teams which are thus victimised. They collapsed in such a remarkable manner that nine wickets were down for 55. But Kent mis8°d one of the finest opportunities which ba« ever fallen to the lot of any fielding team on a good wicket, by allowing the last two men to become very well set before the bowling was changed, a mistake which had extraordinary consequences. Mr. Mason and Mr. Bradley went on at the com mencement of the innings and having met with very great success were still bowling when Mr. Nicholls was joined by Roche. A t lunch time they had not been changed although the total had been raised to 97. After lunch they tried once more to part the two obstinate latsmen, who once more became well set, before at last—with the total at 120—a change was tried. But it was then too late; the fielding became L o se ; the batsmen were missed several times, and the runs came with alarming rapidity. Bowler after bowler was tried in vain, and it was not until the partnership had beaten all records for the tenth wicket, having produced 230 in two hours and a-half, that the innings closed. It was not by any means a great exhibition o f batting, but it was decidedly effective. W ith a great deal o f the life taken out of them Kent did not do very well in batting, although Mr. Mason and Mr. Hearne p'ayed very tine cricket. In their second innings Middlesex, with a lead of nearly a hundred, did moderately well, Mr. Warner playing a great game and Trott hitting brilliantly. Kent never looked like pulling the match off. Alec Hearne was not responsible for being run out. M id d le se x . First innings. P. F. Warner, c Mason, b Bradley ...........* ............ 0 H. B. Hayman, b Bradley... 14 H. B. Cambridge won by five wickets. For once the exceedingly weak team which the M C.C. put in the field did not play up as if it were composed of the most famous cricketers in the world, but, true to the traditions of the club, it struggled very gamely to the end. No fewer than twelve counties were playing matches, so that the M.C.C. had a very limited choice, and the team included three undergraduates. No one knowing the class of the batsmen in the team could have felt very sur prised when the Cambridge bowlers dismissed them one after the other for small scores, for on paper f^rm very few of them were worth half-a-dozen runs. Mr. Stanning, one of the undergraduates, dis tinguished himself, and received some help from Pougher and King. In bowling the M.C.C. was almost as weak as in batting—again on paper—for Mead and Young were almost the only men who could be depended on. But they were quite able to take care of the interests of the club, and, after Moon and Stogdon had made a good stand for the fir*t wicket, they proceeded to show that the Austra lians are not the only men who can get wickets on the University eround. As a result of their efforts the club had a lead of one run when each side had completed an innings. The M.C.C. fared badly in the second innings, but Cambridge did not have a walk over. M.C.C.
