Cricket 1899
182 tjftlcK E t : A WEEKLY RECORD O f THE g a m e J une 8, 1899 HAMPSHIRE v. YORKSHIRE. Played at Southampton on June 1, 2 and 3. Yorkshire won by nine wickets. If Hampshire had been able to place their strongest team in the field for this match they might possibly had been able to count a victory to their credit, for Yorkshire were at a very great disadvantage in the absence of F. S. Jackson, Rhodes and H ust. But although the home team played up in a very plucky manner in their second innings, they were always oui of the running after the partnership of Lord Hawke and Wainwiight in Yorkshire’s first innings. Up to that time Yorkshire were doing very well, for against their score of 184 they had taken five Yorkshire wickets for 83. But the state of the game was com pletely altered by the time that the partnership of Lord Hawke and Wainwright was ended, for by brilliant cricket the two Yorkshiremen put on 225 runs in two hours and twenty-five minutes. Both innings were without fault. Alter this Haigh, in less than an hour, swelled the total by 71. W ith 241 to make to save the innings defeat, Bampshire began remarkably well, Mr. Hobson and Barton putting up 126 for the first wicket (they had made 69 for the firsc wicket in the first innings), so that a good fight seemtd possible. Afterwards, however, although Mr. Hill and Mr. Radcliffe did very well, Wainwright proved too good for most of the team. Mr. Ernest Smith made his reappearance in the Yorkshire team, scoring 32 and taking five wickets in the first innings. H am psh ire . First innings. C. Played at Edgbaston on June 1, 2 and 3. Drawn. Still without Lockwood, and also without Brock well, who was at Nottingham, an interested spectator of the doings of the England team, Surrey did not enter upon their contest with Warwickshire with any very great confidence. Nevertheless, at the end of the first day they were in a comfortable position, for, thanks to good cricket by Abel, Mr. Jephson, Mr. Leveson-Gower, Mr. H. B. Richardson, W ood, and T. Richardson, they had made a big score, and had moreover got rid of a good man in Mr. Bainbridge for tt total o f 18 runs. Abel and Jephson put on 118 for the first wicket in an hour and a half. Friday’s cricket pointed to an interesting finish if there was time to bring the match to a conclusion. Warwickshire were by no means in a bad position when stumps were drawn, for they were only 70 runs behind and had disposed of Abel and Mr. Jephson. W . G. Quaife, L'lley, Diver, and W . Quaife all played very fine cricket, Lilley scoring fast. On Saturday morning Surrey did so badly at first that there seemed a pros- p* ct that they would be severely beaten. Six wickets were down for 90, hut Mr. Richardson and Mr. Key made a very fine stand, which quite altered the appearance of the game, and in the course of twenty- five minutes increased the total by 50. The tail collapsed, and Warwickshire had to make 237 to win in three hours. They began fairly well, but half their wickets were down for 125, and it seemed that they would have to fight for existence, as the tail was not considered likely to distinguish itself. But Mr. Glover hit out with gTeat boldness, and when the match ended it was in such a position that neither side could veiy well claim an advantage. Warwick shire, with three wickets in hand, were 43 runs behind. S orbey . First innings. Abel, b Field.......................... 57 D. L. A . Leicestershire were handicapped as well as their opponents, for W ood cock has not recovered from his accident sufficiently to be able te play. L eiceste r sh ir e . LANCASHIRE v. LEICESTERSHIRE. Played at Old Trafford on June 1, 2 and 3. Leicestershire won by 79 runs. The Leicestershire men had reason to be proud of their doings at the end of la«t week, for although Lancashire were w ithout Tyldesley, whose presence in the team might have made all the difference to them, they are not oiten b*aten as easily as they were by the Australians. The main cause of the Lancashire defeat was the collapse of the team in the first innings ; in the second innings, when they had to face the large total o f 326, they made a very plucky attempt to pull the match out of the fire, although they badly wanted someone who could make a really big score. On the Leicestershire side the scoring was very level, and only three men failed to make a fair First innings. C.
