Cricket 1899
174 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J une 1, 1899. Th« Somersetshire men never lost their equanimity during this long innings, they never became indiffer ent In the field, and the last ball was bowled with as much determination a* the first. After their lone and trying outing, it was not surprising that they did not shew up well when their turn came at the wickets, and until Mr. Woods went in and stopped the rot, which w»s becoming awkward, the bowlers had matters all their own way. But with the arrival of the captain the cricket at once became interesting. A splendid stand was rrade by him and Mr. Trask, who. in the course of a little over an hour, put on 85 runs together. Mr. W oods began his innings by driving a ball to mid off for six, and w h s nearly run out over making the first run—the other five runs were overthrows. He made some very pretty hits at times, coming down on the ball very hard, and running between wickets as if his life depended on making another single. But such is the nature of a great cricketer. Mr. Trask’s play was a great contrast to that of bis captain, but it was nevertheless de lightful to watch. After they were parted the end seemed near, for until the last two men were in wickets fell rapidly. But the last wicket put on no fewer than 75 runs. Mr. Daniell played very good cricket indeed. In the follow on Mr. W oods again r*layed excellent cricket, and was well backed up by Mr. Stanley. Robson Gill, and Mr. Newton, but a victory.for Surrey was a foregone conclusion. S u b b e t . V .
