Cricket 1899

J une 1, 1899. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 167 MIDDLESEX v. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. Played at Lord’s on May 25 and 26. Middlesex won by 7 wickets. So greatly in favour of the bowlers was the wicket, that on the first day of this match three innings were completed. On the first day’s play Middlesex had much the best of it. thanks to tLe excellence of the bowling. Although it w h s obvious that the wicket would be in favour of the bowlers, W .G. did not think it advisable to put Middlesex in. From the first the bowlers held the upper hand, and the wicke's fell with rapidity; W .G ., who wisely tried to hit, was the only man who made double figures. Ih e Middlesex batting was not by any mtaLS brilliant, and Paish met with almost as much success with the tall as J. T. Hearne and Trott. But for tin fine cricket played by Mr. Hayman atd Bawlin the score would hardly have equalled that o f Gloucesttrehire. Again the bowlers had the best of matters when the visitors batted a second time. The Doctor played a very good and very sound innings. Mr. W . 8. A . Brown made a useful 24, and Mr. Townsend was run out when he was set well enough to have perhaps turned the for tunes of the game. Middlesex had to make 70 on Friday morning, and found no difficulty in knocking off the runs. G loucestershire . First in n in gs. Second inniD gs. W.G.Grace.cFoley.bHearne 11 c Cobb, b Hearne 33 W .
