Cricket 1899

164 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME J cne 1, 1899 innings in first-class cricket, their previous best being 698 against Sussex on the same ground in 1888. Abel’s sudden and startling return to form will be hailed with delight by all Surrey enthusiasts. His 357 not out is the largest score ever made by a professional cricketer in a first-class match, the largest ever made for Surrey, and the largest ever compiled on the immortal Oval. M r. Craw ford’s score of 129 is his first century in first- class cricket, and his runs were put together in brilliant fashion. The capital performances of Middlesex against Yorkshire and Oxford University against the Australians come as pleasant surprises. Mr. Champain’s century at Oxford is deserving of all praise, as is Mr. Warner’s at Lord’s. Trott hit in splendid fashion for his one hundred and sixty-four, and obtained his runs at the rate of one a minute, his chief hits being twenty-seven fours. One drive he made fromWainwright’s bowling was particularly noticeable, the ball striking the pavilion seats with such force that it rebounded almost to the wicket. LONDON & COUNTY BAN K v.
