Cricket 1899

162 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J une 1, 1899. don’t do well.” “ Oh, I see,” said the little boy, and he added, after a pause, “ hut, you know, Flowers, don’t you think Mycroft is rather old for a colt.” Flowers was equal to the emergency. “ Ah, sir,” he said, “ that’s just his artfulness.” The small boy was completely mystified by this, and was, more over, silenced for the time being. But pre sently Flowers was put on to bowl again, and promptly finished off the innings by taking the last four or five wickets in an over or two. Before he had reached the pavilion his perse cutor was again on his track. “ I’m very much afraid, Flowers,” he said, “ that you did not consider Mycroft’s feelings quite as much as you pretended you did.” To which Flowers replied, with great gravity, “ That’s where the bad luck comes in, you see, sir. I bowls the ball, and after that it all depends on the batsman ; if he gets out, out he gets, and all the bowlers in the world can’t help him ! ” Needless to say, this soft answer turned away wrath. Sad to say, Flowers’ benefit match at Lord’s on Whit-Monday was a failure as far as weather was concerned. W . A. B e t t e s w o r t h . FLOW ERS’ BATTING AVERAGES FOR NOTTINGHAM SH IRE. Year.
