Cricket 1899
M ay 25, 1899. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, 157 TH E AUSTRALIANS. THE YORKSHIRE MATCH. FIFTH MATCH OF THE TOUR. Played at Sheffield on May 22, 23 and 24. Abandoned. To the very great disappointment of a holiday crowd who, despite th°i warning that if they were admitted to the ground no money would be returned, to the number of about nine thousand enterei the Bramall Lane enclosure. No cricket could be played on Monday. Heavy rain fell during the evening, and there was a slight shower at midday on Tuesday, but the game was begun at about half-past twelve, when Yorkshire went in. The invincible Howell quickly made his presence felt, and Brown retired for a single. Yurkshiremen became uneasy when Tunnicliffe, after being twice missed by Trumper, was caught by him off Trum ble; and when Mitchell was out l.b.w. for a duck’s egg it was feared that there would be a breakdown in the batting. But neither Jackson nor Denton is a man who lose his head when his side is in difficulties; to them a bowler’s reputation depends entirely on what he can do against them, and as fortune was on their side they soon began to make runs. By sound cricket, and by hitting every loose ball, they brought the score to 83 by lunch time, so that Yorbchiremen were quite pleased with themselves. Unfortunately forevery body the rain came down in torrents. The wicket was flooded, aud it was obvious to all th* world that it was impost-ible to play any more on that day. Ag«in the rain fell yesterday, and it was so >n decided t j abandon the match. Y o rksh ire . 1 Denton, not o u t. No-ball .. .. On Monday it was not p ssible to play cricket at Nottingham. On 'Juesday, on a queer wicket, Notts began baiting with Shrewsbury and A . O Jones, who made an excellent stand afu r some preliminary slow play. A t 55 Jones was bowled ly Keisley, a colt who took the place of Lockwood, whose h g is not well enough yet to a low him to play, Shrewsbury continued to play fine cricket; he is in splendid foim this season. A couple of leg-before-wicbet decisions disposed of both Gunn and Shrewsbury when they seemed well set. At lunch time the scoie was 83 for three wickets, which, on a wicket which seemed likely to bee me very difficult, was by no means a bad beginniog, while the hundred went up when four wickets were down. There had already been an interruption of some tv enty minutts owing to rain, and at 119 for five wickets another heavy shower came down, and stumps were drawn for the day. There was no play yesterday. N o tts . A. 0 . Jones, b Kersley 31 Dench, not out Shrewsbury, lbw, H ayw ard.................. 40 Gunn (W .), lbw, b H ayw ard.................. 10 J. A. Dixon, c T. Owing to rain it was decided not to begin thii match until Tuesday morning. To Leicestershire fell the good fortune of winning the to*s. and on a wicket which, while it waft difficult, was not as bad as it was likely to be la er,‘ they did fairly well, although the cricket was for the most part very slow and uninteresting. Mr. De Trafford, however, was in in great form, scoring 45 in three-quarters of an hour. For the loss of only two wickets Essex j uton over 50 runs, when rain, which had already interrupted play, again fell. When play was resumed, Mr. 0 * en , Mr. McGahey and Mr. Turner all played fine cricktt on an easy pitch, and the Leicestershire total wa- pissed for the loss of four wickets. On Wedne>day the game was abandoned without any further p ay. L eice ste r sh ir e . Knight, c Russell, b Young .................. 15 Brown,cMead,bYoung 16 C.J.B.
