The abstract and brief chronicle of the time.— Hamlet T h e record of the Australians up to the present is : Matches played 5, won 2, lost 1, drawn 2. Darling has won the toss once and lost it four times. T h e stand for the last wicket at the Oval on Friday in the Gloucestershire first innings against Surrey by Wrathall and Board was as memorable as the stand for the first wicket by the same tw o men in the second Gloucestershire innings against Surrey in 1897 on the same ground. Last Friday they added 106 to the score in seventy minutes; in 189S they put on 145 runs in almost the same time. I n the matches on the last three days of last week there was some remarkably quick scoring, of which the follow ing are the most notable examples :— May 18. E. Jones, Australians v. An England X I., 54 out of 66 in half an hour. May 18. G. L. Jessop, Cambridge University v. Yorkshire, 171 out of 2( 6 in an hour and three- quarters. Mr. Jessop made his hundred in 65 minutes. May 19. Board and Wrathall put on 106 runs for the last Gloucestershire ticket against Surrey in 70 minutes. May 18. The partnership between V. F. S. Crawford and K . J. Key in the first innings of Surrey v. Gloucestershire produced 65 runs in 35 minutes.
