Cricket 1899

130 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M ay 18, 1899. favour of the bowlers, but no one thought that there would be any difficulty in making the runs until M istii began to create a panic. W icket after wicket fell, until the wholesirie was ou tfor 13, Mistri faking 7 wickets for 3 runs. I t is inter esting to note that in this year he was first both in batting and bow ling in the Patiala averages— 35'2 in batting, 10 runs per wicket in bow ling— and thus became the winner of a noble challenge cup, presented by the Private Secretary o f the Maharaja, a gentleman whose name, Sardar Shamshi Singh, irresistibly reminds one of that of the Indian Prince cricketer. The season of 1898-99 brought Mistri prominently to the front. H e practically won the match for Patiala against the Ganeshkhind eleven, captained b y His Excellency Lord Sandhurst, the Governor, b y scoring 137 runs. This was the season when the Patiala team was strengthened by the inclusion of Hearne, Brockwell and Ranjitsinhji— a nice trio to meet when the wicket was good and the bow ling feeble. But, notwithstand in g this useful addition to the team, the cup given b y the gentleman whose name has already been mentioned was, for the second time, won by Mistri, whose aggregate was 1,330 runs for 26 innings (three times not o u t ); average 66 5. Am ong his chief scores were 42 and 106 not out, 63 and 46 not out, 255, 196— these two scores in succession— 61, 90 and 151, 62. Readers of Cricket will remember that M istii was the partm r of Ranjitsinhji in the famous stand for the third Patiala wicket against UmbalJa, when more than 400 runs were put on by the two batsmen—the exact number still remains a mystery. M ish i’s score was 255 and Ranjitsinhji’s 257 not out. If the proposed Indian teem comes to England next year, Mistri w ill certainly be one of its chief attractions, and every Englishman would be pleased if he were to distinguish himself. W . A .
