Cricket 1899

M ay 4, 1899. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 109 OXFORD UNIVERSITY SENIORS’ MATCH. Played at Oxford on May 1, 2, and 3. Mr. Montmorency’s side won by nine wickets. A decided weakness in the bowling- gave batsmen their opportunity, of which they proceeded to make excellent use on Monday. Mr. de Montmorency and Mr. Collins both played very fine cricketv and they were well backed up by most of the rest of their side. At the close of play on Monday Mr. de Montmorency’s side had scored 290 for the loss of ten wickets (twelve a-side). The last wicket made a stand, and Mr. Page’s side had to go in against a total of 328. The first two men made a stand, but afterwards the scores were small. In the follow-on, Mr. Hollins played a good game, but the feature ‘ of the innings was the fine batting of Mr. Martyn and Mr. Roberts. M r . R . H . dr M ontm ore . vcy ’ s S id e . F. H. K . Played at Cambridge on May 1, 2, and 3. Mr. Stanning’s side won by eight wickets. In the first innings of Mr. Moon’s side all the well-known men failed to do themselves justice, but the innings was redeemed from mediocrity by the good cricket shown by Mr. A.Jfcl. Begun at Lord’s yesterday. In weather wfcich was anything but attrac tive, Mr. Fry and Mr. Brann made a fine stand for the Sussex first wicket. Both Trott and Hearne were made to appear easy. Mr. Brann’s runs came slowly after his modern fashion, but he seemed quite at home, while his partner was in groat form, hitting very hard whenever the slightest opportunity offered itself. In a little more than half-an- hour fifty runs were put on, and in an hour nearly ninety. After a stay of seventy minutes, during which he had shown excellent cricket, Mr. Brann was bowled by Trott with the total at 91. Mr. Fry’s score was then 65. Such a good beginningwashighly satisfactory. Marlow came in and seemed to be getting well set when he also fell to Trott. The total was then 129, of which Mr. Fry was credited with 83. So far so good. But this was the begin ning of the end, and Trott and Hearne carried everything before them. Mr. Fry was within two runs of his hundred when he was caught and bowled by Trott— a splendid innings which included fifteen fours, and which lasted for a couple of hours. Hearne and Trott both bowled very finely, more particularly when they began to get the whip hand. The M.C.C. innings was only noteworthy for the very fine cricket shown by Trott, who followed up his good bowling by making nearly half the runs for his side. S u ssex . C.B. Fry, c and bT rott 98 G.
