Flayers, at the Oval, July 5th, 6th and 7th. Jtt. Carpenter hit a ball clean out o f the ground—a feat now perform ed for the first tim e at the Oval. Gentlem en v. Players, at L ord’s, July 9th, 10th and 11th. In the first innings of the form er M r. J. H . Hale had m ade 31 out of the first 37 lun8 scored when he was dismissed. Sussex v. Surrey, at Brighton, July 11th and 18th. G . W ells, o f Sussex, was out in an extraordinary manner in his first innings. In playing a ball from Caffyn he broke the handle o f his bat aud the pod flew over his shoulder, disturbing the bails. B is name appears in the score-sheet thus : “ G. W ells, hit w ., b Caffyn, 10.” England v. Surrey, at the Oval, A ugust 6th and 7th. John L illy white stayed at the w ickets for forty minutes and was then dis m issed without scoring. M .C.C. and Ground v. Sussex, at L ord’s, A ugust 9th and 10th. Seven o f the form er were run out in the m atch. 1861.—Gentlem en v. Playei s, at L ord ’s, July 1st and 2nd. J. Jackson and E . W illsher bow led un changed through both innings o f the Gentle men. Surrey v. Yorkshire, at Sheffield. July 22nd, ‘23rd and 2lth. John Berry, of Yorkshire, was dismissed first ball be received in each innings. 1862.—A ll-E ngland Eleven (53 a n d 96) v. 16of O xfoid University (92 and 67), at O xford, June 16th, 17th and 18th. This m atch ended in a tie. Sussex v. K ent, at Brighton, June 26th and 27th. In the first innings o f Sussex J. W ells obtained four wickets with consecutive balls. Surrey v. Yorkshire, at Sheffield, July 7th, 8th and 9th. T. Brownhill, o f Yorkshire, was dis m issed first ball he received in each innings. Gentlemen of M .C.C. v. Gentlemen o f K ent, at Canterbury, A ugust 13th, 14th and 15th. Playing for the form er M r. E. M . Grace went in first and carried out his bat for 192 out of a total of 344, and then obtained all ten w ickets in the second innings o f his oppo nents, one man being absent and the match twelve-a-side. Surrey v. The North, at M anchester, A ugust 14th and 15th. In the second innings of the N orth (H ayward and Farr in) it took one hour and a-half to bring the score from 10 to 36, so fine was the bow ling and fielding of Surrey. Surrey v. England, at the Oval, August 25th, 26th and 27th. In the first innings o f Surrey E dgar W illsher was no-balled six times in succession by John L illy while for his hand being above his stioulder. Tnis action caused an alteration to be m ade in the laws o f the gam e. 1863.—N ew South W ales v. V ictoria, at Sydney, Feb ruary 5th, 6th and 7th. It was stated that S. Jones, o f New South W ales, was adjudged “ run out ” after “ over ” had been called, and in consequence, after many w ords, he was reinstated, and the gam e proceeded. Two of ihe Victoria party and their umpire (Smith) declined to have any further part in the affair, and returned to M elbourne. In consequence of the dispute this annual con test was not resumed until December, 1865. M .C.C. and Ground v. O xford University, at L ord’s, June 18th. The m atch was com pleted in one day. Sussex v. Kent, at Brighton, June 25th, 26th and 27th. The ball which bow led W . G ood- hew (K ent) in his second innings actually stuck fast in the centre o f the w icket about six inches from the ground. Sussex v. Surrey, at Brighton, July 13th, 14th and 15th. Bowling for the form er, C. H . Ellis had no less than 201 runs scored from his deliveries in one innings. England v. Thirteen o f K ent, at Canterbury, A ugust 10th, 11th and 12th From the first ball delivered against K ent (by Grundy) seven were scored, three for byes and four for the overthrow.
