Cricket in Southern California in mid summer, when the turf is everywhere brown and burnt, end the only green things are eucalyptus trees and orchards, would seemto be quiteoutof thequestion. But there are fifty thousand Erglishmen in California, end many a thiiving cricket club, keen to play though the weather be hot and the wicket brown. Many of the cricketers of Southern California have their ranches within the prolific fruit belt which neighbours Los Angeles. So once a year, at least, the wickets are pitched, the orange groves on the slopes of the Sieira Madre left untenanted, and the cricket championship of Southern Cali fornia fought out on some cool field by the sea. This year the tournament was played at Santa Moncia, atd the three chief contesting teams represented that town, LcsAngeles, andaclub called “ The Southern Californians” respectively. The games were played on extensive polo grounds, devoid of turf, of course, but fairly level and true. The wicket, carefully rolled and prepared, was laid withmatting, andplayedwell throughout. The leading spirit in Southern Cali fornia cricket is E. W. Barry, tbe son of the colonel of a crack English regiment. Barry is a good bat, a fair fast bowler, and an indefatigable captain. Among the other good cricketers on the three contesting teams was A. Butcher, an old Cambridge University man; W. H. Young, an excellent all-round player; R. H. H. Chapman, an Uppingham boy of some years ago ; H. Jones Bateman, captain of theCharterhouse teamof 1884; and several other university and public school men. To judge from reports J. Scott is the best bat in Southern Cali fornia, but he failed to come off in this year’s tournament. The score of the deciding game follows :— S a n t a M o n ic a . A .
