Cricket 1898

O ct . 27, 1898. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 453 three wickets were down. At this stage of the game the Philadelphians seemedto be in for a good thing, but a most un mistakable rot now set in, andthe innings was over much more quickly than was anticipated. Again Ainsworth met with great success with the ball. Against the unexpectedly small total of 143 the Eoglishmen began to make runs with steadiness and certainty. When stumps were drawn 1he scDre was 114 for four wickets. S > far matters looked well for the Englishmen, but on the following morning the tail fared even worse than that of the Philadelphians, and in the end the visitors were 10 runs behind, as ia the first match between the teams. The causeof the downfall was the bawling of King, who began the day’s cricket by taking fourwickets for a single run. His complete analysis for tiie innings was 15 balls, five runs, one maiden, and five wickets. The Philadelphi ins began their second inningsin adisheartenirgmanner, one wicket falling for eight, and three for 13. After this, however, the hopes (.f the teamrose considerably, for Brown, Clarke and Adams in turn were useful partners, and A. M. Wood, who on hib ] art, played a really splendid game. Thanks chic-fly to him the Englishmen hid to make 158 to win. In the time which remained fur play they were not seen 'o ^reat advantage, and when stumps weie drawn, the four best bats of tbe team were out, while arrears of 89 runs had still to be wiped out. As the tail had frequently given signs that they wert- not to be trusted to make ruus, there was a delighlful uncertainty about the resul when they began their task on the third morning. Tney were however in great form, and after Bosanquet and Winter had brought the scare to 96 for five wickets, Y. T. Hill made victory almost certain by pla)ing a determined, and at the same time, careful iunings. It was a well-fought out match, and a very little mi^ht li tve given tlio victory to the Philadelphians. GeNTLKMKN ok I' First innings.
