D e a r S i r , —In your issue of Cricket a short time ago, you expressed a desire to know the exact number of ruDS scored by Dr. W . Gr. Grace in first-class cricket. I have by me your issue of October, 1894, in which there is an article by Dr. H. R. Bland, which is my chief reference. Cricket in later years I have got from Wisden’s Almanac. His totals are, including this year, 1,189 completed innings, for49,229 runs, giving an average of 4140. Hoping you will put this in your next issue, 1 am, Sir, Tours very truly, W. J. B. C r o u c h . SURREY BATSMEN, &o. To the Editor o f C r ic k e t. S ir, —It is really very remarkable how much difficulty cricket statisticians find in compiling tables of aggregates and averages. 1 hailed Mr. Hastling’s tables of Surrey batsmen with pleasure, but, alas, the very first line showed me that they were worthless. They positively biistle with errors of all kinds. Let me indicate a few. Abel’saverage is actually worked out at more than six runs per innings too many ! Brockwell’s three runs, and Maurice Read’s two runs too many. Abel’s runs are nearly 1,000 short, and Jupp’s, 100. Brockwell, Hayward, Holland and Lockwood have some matches counted twice over; and in the averages of those who played in the fifties are included those matches in which Surrey and Sussex, or Surrey and Kent, combined agaiust England. Caffyn, somehow or other, is credited with fifteen innings and 246 runs too many. In fact, I do not think a dozen items are correct in the whole list. I append an amended table of those who have made 1,500 runs for Surrey since the present club was formed. Thematch between the County and Manchester in 1857 is not included, as I have not the score. Errors in this list are due to misprints. Besides these, P. Burbridge, W. H. Game, L. Shuter, G. Strachan, G. Elliott, G. Jones, J. Street, J. Beau mont, T. Bowley, and J. W. Sharpe made over 1,000 runs, but the only item of interest is that of P. Burbridge— 66 1095 16-5 104 2. Tours faithfully, G. L a c y . Sandgate, September 30, 1898. P.S.—As for Grace’s runs, the Rev. H. A. Tate has published a book contain ing each score separately. Making the corrections which he has himself indi cated in his errata, Mr. Grace’s figures from 1864 are—1,207 49,843 41‘2. S ir —Having been a considerable traveller myself (my point to point record is 187,000 miles—by mail steamer, 82,000; sailing vessel, 60,000; rail, 14,000; wagon, 13,000; coach and post cart, 6,500; horseback, 7,000; foot, 4,500), it occured to me to try and make a rough estimate of the number of miles travelled by professional cricketers in the exercise of their profession. There was no difficulty in choosing a representative in mi , for as Ulyett played for twenty years, and went five times to Australia, twice to New Zealand, twice to America, and once to South Africa, he clearly holds N E X T ISSUE, T HUR SDA Y , NOVEMBER 24.
