Victoria won by three wickets. The weather played a large part in this match. Opinions were divided as to whether the captain who won the toss would be well advised to go in first. The choice rested with Garrett, the New South Wales captain. He decided to send his men in, and when each side had played an innings, he may reasonably have congratulated himself on his judg ment. Unfortunately for his side, rain fell at an inconvenient moment, and the result was a remarkable collapse in the second innings, although even after this it was anybody’s game. At the beginning of the match the wicket, though soft, was fairly jeasy, but it was nevertheless a fine performance of New South Wales to score 273. The first wicket fell at 27, but at lunch time the score had been raised to 92 without further loss, Donnan being not out 31 and Noble not out 46. At 109 Noble was bowled by Trott for a good innings of 56. After this Gregory was the only man who made any prolonged resistance to the bowling ; he was in his best form. When stumps were drawn on the first day the score was 177 for four wickets, Gregory not out 44. On the second day rain fell incessantly, and no play was possible. New South Wales added nearly another hundred to their score on the third day, and seemed to have a remarkably good chance of winning. The first two Victoria batsmen, McLeod and Worrall, at once began to force the game, realising that unless runs were made quickly they would not be made at all. The result, as far as these two batsmen were concerned, was satisfactory, for 72 went up in fifty minutes before the first man (McLeod) was out for 31. But for some time after this the bowlers got the mastery over batsman after bats man, Worrall alone excepted. It was indeed fortunate for Victoria that he was in such brilliant form, for without his help the score of the side would have been very small indeed. At the close of the day the score was 153 for seven wickets, of which his share was no less than 91 not out. He increased this to 103on the following morning, and his innings is considered as one of the best ever seen in Australia on a queer wicket. Stuckey played a very useful innings of 31. When New South Wales went in again they found that the bowlers had the upper hand, and the team collapsed for 90. This left Victoria with 177 to win, a formidable task which was not accomplished until excitement had risen high; an accident might at any time have given New South Wales the match.
