For the accounts of the above tour we are indebted to the Bombay Gazette THE GANESHKHIND MATCH— LORD SANDHURST’S ELEVEN v. KATHIAWAR TEAM. AnimportantmatchbetweenLordSand hurst’s Eleven and Kathiawar opened on Monday, Aug. 29. A largecrowdof natives poured up to Ganesbkhind, despite occa sional heavy showers, as it was known that Prince Ranjitsinbjiwas coming with his old team. Tbe visitors won the toss, and put in their opponents to play and went slowly at first, Greig and Bond batting, Ranjitsinhji and Shivshanker bowling. The rain caused some delay. After bowling had changed, Ranjitsinhji caught Greig by a short sharp catch behind the wicket. Deas made a good stand, hitting out freely. Bond, who made top score, made some pretty cuts. His Excellency was despatched by the first ball, caught by Billimoria, who brought off a series of brilliant catches. In Kathiawar innings two of their best batsmen went out easily. Rmjitsinhji then partnered Billimoria, facing Deas, who was bowling swiftly. The Prince received the first four balls of the over carefully, but got the fifth away for two. Following Biilimoria, who hit a boun dary, the Prince got a single off Sale in the next over. Light was getting slack when play was stopped till the morrow. Numerous ladies, gentlemen, and native chiefs witnessed the match. The governor’s band played. The match was resumed on Tuesday, and when the fact was known that Ranjitsiohji was batting, it brought out a large crowd quite early in the day; some hundreds of Hindus, and many European ladies and gentle men, but unfortunately the weather was against the game, whichhad tobe B to p p e d twice. Ranjitsinhji played a splendid game, considering the state of the wicket, andmade 68, before Greig bowled him. The steady play of Hemo and Ranjitsinhji pulled the match out of the fire, the team making 164. Lord Sand hurst’s Eleven went in just before five for the second innings, which concluded shortly before the bell rung, for 74, and the match was drawn. For Lord Sand hurst’s team, Bond played well, and Deas bowled throughout in capital style. Lord Sandhurst fielded well for his side. Bapasola, Billimoria and Oghad all fieldedwell for Kathiawar. Shivshanker bowled in terrible form, taking nearly all the wickets. G aneshkhind . Capt. Greig,c Ranj iteinbji, b S h ivsh an k er.................... M r. Kathiawar, was played on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. Before the game commencedan enormous crowd of persons of all classes fringed the edge of the Gymkhana ground. Half a dozen tents werepitched for the accommodation of visitors. The crowd was as great as on the occasion of thePresidency cricket match. TheGym khana won the toss, and sent in the visitors to bat, play commencing at 12.15. Greig started to bowl from the Pavilion end, and Deas from the lower end. The first wicket fell for 10 runs, Oghad being run out. Prince Ranjitsinhji next joined Shivlal, amid applause, but before he could make a run was caught by Greig, which was very disappointing to the vast crowd. The princeretired smiling. The rest of the team did little, the innings closing for 35 runs. Poona opened their venture at 3.15. Sprott and Bond went in to face the bowling of Prince Ranjitsinhji and Shivshanker. Sprott got a single, and was clean bowled, Greig filling the vacancy. Kathiawar at this time was fielding well. Bond was caught smartly by the wicket-keeper. Sale filled tbe vacancy, and matters began to look a little brighter for Gymkhana. Ranjit- sinhji’s bowling looked very deadly, and the excited crowd, eager to cheer, and misled by a fallen bail, under the im pression that Sales’ wicket had gone, applauded vociferously. Greig did not survive the next over, Half a century was put up at 4.40, and at 5 o’clock the innings closed for 61 runs. At 5.15 Kathiawar went in for their second venture, Oghad and Shivshanker facing the bowling of Deas and Sale. Shivshankerwas sooncaught out, hisplace being taken by Ranjitsinbji. As he came out from the pavilion he was cheered. Again, unfortunately, he was caught out. The crowd began to dis perse, greatly disappointed. There was not much excitement in the rest of the match between Poona and Kathiawar. Nearly half the tents were removed, and the crowd was much less. Play began at 12 o’clock. Major Ashby and Oghad went in to face the bowling of Deas and Greig. The weather was fine and the wicket improved greatly. Kathiawar completed the second venture for 69 runs, and 43 runs remained for the Gymkhana to win the match. With the loss of two batsmen they won the match by eight wickets. K ath iaw ar .
