TWENTY-SECOND AND LAST MATCH OF THE TOUR. Played at Adelaide on March 19, 21, 22, 23. Drawn. For a change Mr. Stoddart won the toss, and his team had the opportunity, of which they did not make the most, of batting first on a good wicket. As in the return Victoria match, several of the men collapsed for very small scores, and al though Ranj itsinbj imade 40 and Storer 32, seven wickets were down for 124, a very disheartening state of affairs. It was then that Board and the captain came to the rescue of the side, and so well did they bat that they put on 77 before they were p irted. Board hit out in a way which is not usual in Australia. At the end of the first day the South Australians were only 168 behind with all their wickets in hand. On the Monday morning, Lyons and Darling played great cricket, and kept together until the total was 166— only 56 behind the total made by the visitors. This state of affairs seemed about as bad as it could be, but the rest of the team did not follow the example of the first two batsmen, and after all South Australia only had a lead of 65, which was lessened by 32 by Wainwright and Mason before the day’s play ended. On the Tuesday, Wainwright played his best innings of the tour, and at last Mason regained his form. They took the score to 187 before Wainwright was out for 107. Shortly afterwards Mason’s bril liant innings also came to a closa. When stumps were drawn the total was 318 for five wickets, so that the Englishmen were in a very satisfactory position. The tail, however, collapsed, and it was only owing to want of time that Me. Stoddart’s team saved itself from another severe defeat. Darling and Hill completely mastered the bowling, and, coming together with the score at 34 for one wicket, were not parted until it was 221, when Darling was caught at the wicket for a superb 96. Hill still continued to make runs, and when the match ended his score was 124 not out, and South Australia were within 68 runs of victory with eight wickets in hand. M r . S toddart ’ s T eam .
