Cricket 1898
S e p t . 15, 1898. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME 423 of M olo’s services to Lancashire emphasise the lesson from the other point of view. In the dearth of promising young profes sional bowlers lies, perhaps, the most dis couraging feature of the cricket of the year. Be the cause what it may—the decline of cottage industries in villages, the rivalry of football, the encroachments of league competitions—the fact is indisputable. There are some signs that the teaching of Mr. Stoddart’s reverses in Australia has been taken to heart, and that some of our most experienced bowlers have learned to put more headwork into their methods ; but of professional bowling, as a whole, it can only be said that it leaves a good deal to be desired in this respect. Probably some of the invective that is directed against slow batting might well be bestowed on mechanical bow ling. . . . . . W ith deference to those who delight in praising bygone times, we may venture the opinion that county fielding is at least as good now as it has ever b een ; and the champion county deserves its honours for its com manding excellence in this as in other departments............................ In a game in which fortune plays so large a part it is not to be expected that an arbitrary mathematical system of reckoning will exactly represent the comparative strength of the combatants, and there must always remain room for piivate opinion about the merits of the strongest elevens which the counties can severally place in the field. Indeed, it is surprising that the statistics, even of a long series of home and home matches, should so con sistently conduce to one conclusion and should tally so well with the estimate which would be formed by most com petent critics from a general survey of the season.” FIRST-CLASS HUNDREDS IN 1898.
