Cricket 1898
S e p t. 15, 1898 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME 421 agreed to take the team home under their auspices if I will agree to go home as manager.” Yet at the meeting of the Australian council Mr. Lipscombe moved that a team be sent from Australia to England in 1899, and that the manager should be appointed by the council, after consulta tion with the players, as it was recognised that the players must be favourable to a man with whom they were to be so closely associated for many months. It is clear that the chief players of Australia have looked askance upon the Cricket Council ever since that cable message to England directing the 1896 team to get back to Australia by a certain date. Everyone must admit the cable to have been a decided blunder, but it is only fair to say that the council as a body was not responsible for it. It is not to be supposed that our players would submit to any arbitrary treatment of that sort. If they wish to play in America or South Africa or New Zealand, why, in the name of all that is reasonable, should they not do so ? Their visits to America, South Africa, or New Zealand render a service to cricket in those parts, and if a few additional shots thereby come into the lockers of the players so much the better. It is pleasing to note that the members of the present council are in accord with the players in this matter, and if Mr. J. H ill’s recommendation be adopted, and certain leading players be in future on the council, there will be no likelihood of any recurrence of the incidents which proved so unpleasant in connection with the Australian team in 1896. As the players unanimously wish Major Wardill to go as manager, the council will assuredly not object, for he is just the man for the position, being, as he is, popular with our own players, popular amongst the chief cricketers of Eng land, well known at L ord’s, the Oval, and old Trafford, and fitted for the work b y business capacity, personal worth, and matured experience. But though the council would readily acquiesce in the appointment of Major Wardill as man ager, a strong expression of opinion was given by Messrs. Briscoe, M ’Elhome, and Lloyd, the New South Wales delegates, that the team should go home under the auspices of the Cricket Council, and Mr. M. Evan, of Adelaide, made a strong point in stating that when the M.C.C. took their action they were familiar with the rules and objects of the council, and their object was solely to oppose it. No doubt of i t ; and as the M .C C. is sup ported b y the leading players of Australia, the club may continue to act in opposition to the wishes of the council so far as the 1899 Australian team is concerned. Still, I have strong hopes that the M.C.C. will not enter into a compact with players to flout the duly-appointed governing and controlling body. The M .C.C. wishes to be considered the Marylebone Club of Australia. Suppose a cricket council existed in England. Would the Maryle bone Club join with recalictrant amateurs or professionals to ignore and flout the council ? The mere thought of the thing is an insult to such a club as the Marylebone. RICHMOND.
