Oxford has 9 times had more wins than losses, once an equal number. Oxford was undefeated in the earliest year of the 25, Cambridge in two succes sive seasons (1878-9) a little later. For Oxford the figures are nine times better, once equal, fifteen times worse. In 1878 Cambridge was 10'8 per wicket to the good, in 1884 11-1 to the bad. In 1873 Oxford was 5 3 per wicket to the good, in 1889 12-9 to the bad. These are the extremes in each case. HIGHEST AND LOWEST SCOEES FOE AND AGAINST. C ambridge . O xford . Oxford........ . 1881 One noteworthy point about this list is that ten of the 41 big scores which it includes were made in the 21 matches which the Universities between them played with Sussex during the time over which the record extends. Another is that 20 of the 41 were made during the last three seasons, 1895-6-7, when, thanks largely to some real summer weather, scoring ruled higher all over the country than it had ever done before. It is some what strange that no more than four of Cambridge’s twelve big scores were made on the home ground. S m a l l S cobes ( u n d e e 50). I shall not give a tabulated list of these, but content myself with saying that Cambridge has five times been dismissed for scores of under 50—viz., 45, 44, 37, 36, and 31, the lowest of these being made v. Lancashire, at Manchester, in 1882—and forty times for scores exceed ing 50 but under three figures; Oxford eight times for under 50—viz., 47, 45, 42, 42, 38, 35, 32, and 12, the last-mentioned being v. M.C.C., at Cowley Marsh, in 1877 (one man, A. J. Webbe, absent)— and thirty-eight times for between 50 and 100. On the other hand, Cambridge has seven times got rid of a side of her oppo nents for less than 50—47, 46, 43, 42, 40, 38, and 32, the 32 being by Oxford in the ’Varsity match of 1878—and 32 times for between 50 and 100; Oxford four times for under 50—47, 47, 38, and 37, the last by M.C.C., at Oxford, in 1884—and 26 times for between 50 and 100. A glance at the table of highest and lowest scores will reveal some interesting facts in this connection. Note that during the four years 1875-8 Cambridge was never got rid of for less than 96, and since 1891 her lowest score has been 71. Cambridge’s lowest score has only twice been over 100, Oxford’s has been so no fewer than seven times; but while Cambridge has only three times had a lowest score of over 100 chronicled against her, the same thing has happened to Oxford eleven times. For the three seasons 1887-9 the lowest score for which Oxford dismissed any side was 111; from 1893-5 it was 140. For the first eleven years of the 25 no score reaching 400 runs was made against Cam bridge, 384 being the highest.
