Cricket 1898

34 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M a r c h 31, 1898. will ever be a Hill or a Ranjitsinhji would be rasb in the extreme, but many critics in India are of opinion that, given the opportunities, he will develop into one of the finest cricketers of the day. [For much of the information in the above biography the Editor is indebted to the Ni/t/iri News.] SPEC IAL GENERAL MEET ING OF TH E M.C.C. The expectation that the special general meeting of the M.C.O., which was sum moned for the purpose of electing a secretary in the place of Mr. Perkins, would provide considerable excitement, caused a large number of members to assemble at the Queen’s Hall on February 28th. It had been announced that there would be strong opposition to the recom mendation of the committee, but at the last moment the threat'ned opposition was withdrawn, and the business of the meeting was quietly accomplished. Mr. F. E. Lacey, the Cambridge Blue and Hampshire cricketer, was unanimously elected secretary, and no opposition was offered to the election of the Duke of Buccleuch as a trustee. Amid much applause it was decided that a pension of £400 per annum should be granted to the retiring secretary, Mr. Henry Perkins, who, in a graceful speech, referred to the constant kindness and courtesy he had always received from the members, and with evident emotion stated that their marks of appreciation would never be forgotten by him. The suggested alteration to Rule 17, giving to the committee the entire control of “ the appointment, dismissal, and fixing the salary of the secretary,” gave rise to an animated discussion, and Capt. Bell-Smythe proposed as an amendment the further addition, “ subject to con firmation in general meeting.” Mr. C. B. Marsham also moved an amendment to confine the control to the appointment, and not to include the question of re muneration or power of dismissal. Both amendments were, on a vote, negatived, and the original proposal of the com mittee carried. It was proposed in Section B of Rule 12 to omit the word “ secretary,” as re garded the fact that the offices of treasurer, secretary, and trustees should be vacated only by death, resignation, or the vote of a majority of two-thirds of the members present and voting at a special general meeting. This was carried, but the committee withdrew their contemplated alteration of the first portion of the same rule, which at present provided that the sec retary, like the other officers, must be a member of the club. It had been in tended to exempt the secretary, but it was felt that the body was sufficiently large to secure a thoroughly competent official. With this withdrawal the omission of the “ secretary” from the committee in Rule 13 fell to the ground. CR ICKET IN CALCUTTA . CALCUTTA C.C. v. TOWN CLUB. Played on February 12.
