For the last few years this match at Taun ton has been a thorn in the side of Surrey, who have always had to play an uphill game, in which they have not been able to distin guish themselves. After the play on Thurs day and Friday it seemed that this year’s match would once more leave Surrey a beaten team, but a brilliant display in the follow-on completely altered the appearance of the game of which when play ended on Saturday the visitors had none the worst. The absence of Mr. Woods greatly weakened the Somerset team, but this was more than balanced by the enforced return of Lockwood to London soon after play began, owing to an injury to his arm. His place in the team was taken by Baldwin, who batted well in both innings But it was in bowling that Lockwood was most sadly missed. In his absence there is nothing very alarming in the Surrey bowling this year, and the whole brunt of the attack fell on Richardson, who worked exceedingly hard with much success. A wicket fell soon after the commencement of the game, but when the two Palairets came together, with the score at 11 for one wicket, they wore down the bowling until they had obtained such a complete mastery over it that the total was brought to 160 before they were parted. Of this Mr. R. C. N. Palairet was responsible for 50. By this time there was nothing left in the bowling, and although Mr. L. C. H. Palairet .soon followed his brother, having played a perfect innings of 107, the next two men, Mr. Roe and Mr. F. A. Phillips, added 168 runs for the fourth wicket in an hour and three-quarters. Both men played admirable cricket. At the close of the day the total w*as 3i>2 for the loss of only five wickets. This was increased to 457 on Friday morning. After Br. ckwell had been dismissed for 15, Abel and Holland did so well that Surrey seemed likely to make a big score, but when they were out there was a distinct falling off in the batting, and a follow-on was necessary —over 200 runs in arrear. In the second innings Abel was soon out, but Brockwell and Holland played most attractive cricket, and when stumps were drawn the score had been brought to 132 for the loss of one wicket, so that Surrey were 89 runs behind with nine wickets in hand—not a very promising out look. But on Saturday every man on the side, except Wood, made double figures, and the Somersetshire bowling was altogether inferior to the batting. Brockwell made exactly a hundred in less than three hours by very pretty cricket indeed. Holland algo nearly reached three figures and Mr. Craw ford batted well. Then Hayward and Mr. Jephson completed the demoralisation of the Somersetshire bowlers, and at lunch-time Surrey were 88 runs on with six wickets still to fall, so that they seemed certain to come out of the match with credit. Runs were still made easily, and defeat was soon out of the question, though there was never much chance of declaring the innings. S omerset . G.
