Cricket 1898
374 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. A ug . 25 1898. GERMANTOWN v. PHILADELPHIA. (From the American Cricketer.) The last of the scheduled Halifax Cup games were played on July 16th. Up to this time Germantown and Belmont were tied for first place, each having lost but one game. Both elevens were therefore anxious to win and turned out strong elevens, which easily defeated their opponents, Philadelphia and Belfield. This leaves Germantown and Belmont tie. Germantown met Philadelphia at Wissa- hickon and rolled up the large total of 343 runs, against which Philadelphia, batting on Monday afternoon, were able to make but 104. Captain Brown sent the two colts, Pearson and Graves, to open the batting for Germantown. Pearson was soon clean bowled by Roper for 6 , and E. W . Clark, jun., took his place at the wickets. He was a trifle fluky at first, but soon settled down to steady cricket, while Graves did the scoring. The latter played fine cricket, scoring rapidly, but seemingly without taking any rash chances ; his off-driving along the ground was particularly fine. It was not until the century was well passed that Clark gave Donohugh a chance which that fielder accepted. F. H. Bates filled the vacancy and, as usual, began at once to score. Graves still kept up his good work, and at this time was gettiug near to his century. Finally he made an off-drive to the junior club house, which gave him the coveted three figures. Bates a few minute* later elevated one from Welsh to Rowlandand madeway for Baker. He was clean bowled by Rowland without scoring, and W . W . Noble joined Graves only to lose his partnership. Graves had played a really fine innings for his 126, having offered but one chance at the wicket when he had about 30. It took him but one hour and a quarter to*make his first 100 runs. His hitting was hard, particularly on the off side, and ap parently without effort. Morton became associated with Noble after Graves’ depar ture. Both men scored freely, and runs came at a rapid rate until Noble pulled a short one from Welsh right into Helmbold’s hands on the leg boundary. It was a hard hit and the sun was in Helmbold’s eyes, so that it was a good catch, despite the fact that it went straight to him. After Noble’s departure the innings soon closed. Jordan and P. H. Clark both stayed long enough to get doubles, while Brewster and Brown were less fortunate. Morton carried his bat for a hard-hit 50. All of the Philadelphia bowlers suffered from the long outing, though Rowland came out rather well wilh 4 wickets for 56 runs. Considering the long outing, the fielding was fair throughout, though without any par ticular features. At the close of the Germantown innings there was but half an hour left for play, and Captain Welsh sent Mason and Biddle to the wickets to play out time. P. H. Clark and Morton opened the bowling, and on Clark’s first ball Biddle offered a quick chance to Noble at second man in the slips, which was accepted. H. L. Clark joined Mason but was clean bowled by Morton. Wolfe then played out time with Mason and the game was carried over until Monday, the telegraph showing 6 — 2 —3. On Monday afternoon, Morton being away sick, Bates went on to bowl from the club house end. Little need be said of Phila delphia’s innings. Mason saw Wolfe, Welsh and Dixon disposed of, and was then un fortunately run out by Roper. He had made his 12 runs carefully and looked like staying, Roper batted out 42 by hard hitting, mostly in front of the wicket, and was the last man out, being caught in the outfield by Bates on a good catch off Brewster’s bowling. P. H. Clark did the best boilin g for Germantown, capturing five wickets for 31 runs. Germantown’ s fielding was good, and several good catches were accepted, notably by Noble, Brown, Baker, Bates and Graves. G erm antow n . N. Z. Graves, c W olfe, b Roper .....................126 F.
